I have a 305 out of a mid-late 70's truck, with a 63amp alternator, internally regulated small case, single v-belt, 12si series alt.

I'm wanting to get one out of a junker with a higher capacity, but there are NO pick-n-pulls here, only the "What year sir" they pull it places.

If I go to a large case, and just get the alternator AND mounting brackets off the junk car alt, that would work as long as it's a small block Chevy it came off, right? What years and cars I need to look for? Thanks.

Check out Alterstart (http://www.4alterstart.com)

They sell hi output remanufactured alternators.

They also sell them pretty cheap on eBay.

I got a 135 amp 1-wire alternator from them on eBay for $49 + shipping. Also has a 1-year warranty.

I walked into my local autozone and started hunting with them....found a large-case 105 amp internal reg from a late 70's with a v-belt that worked great. Lifetime warranty, no receipt required.

Go during the day when they aren't so busy and just start hunting...I wish I remembered what mine is from, since the bearings are squealing and I'm exchanging it tomorrow....IIRC, like a 78 Caprice or something, or maybe a Caddie.

EDIT: oh yeah, it was like $100 or so plus a $15 core, but they might've taken my old one as a core, been too long to remember. Did it like 4 years ago and have replaced it twice no questions asked. They did laugh at all the dirt/etc that fell out when I brought it in tho, and laughed again when I said I'd be back almost yearly since it was in an offroad truck. :D

one ton truck is usually a good place to start when looking for large output alternators.

An 82 Cadilac sedan deville with a 368 has a 100(could be 105 it wad difficult to read) amp alt also have one from a 77 Cadilac fleetwood that is 85 amp. both V belt..

Forgot to put this in but just because it is a 1 ton dont bet on it having a high amp alt.. I have an older 1 ton C&C crewcab parts truck that has a 42amp alt..

The alternator is easy to find if you want to go with a large case but getting mounts is going to be harder if you want to put it in the same area. I say go out of U-JERK-IT and just get annother small one and be done with it. On the 1/2 off weekend last weekend I pulled 2 94amp, 1 108 amp, and 1 120amp small case alternators.
A good place to look for a 94 amp one is on chevys with the 4.3 and on the cherokees
