I've got a dryer plug as follows:

I just want to verify that the center L shaped prong is the ground and the two opposing 45 prongs are the hots.
Really would like to test the power out on the new Miller Passport:flipoff2:
Thanks in advance for any help.

Your dryer plug is outdated - the L-prong is a 'common' ground & neutral.
I would run a modern circuit for the dryer, or a dedicated one for the welder.

Just use a meter to verify the voltage at the source.
You do own a voltmeter right ?
If you don't own a voltmeter turn in your man card.

Outdated dryer plugs usually happen in 30 year houses ;)

Niether option is really feasible at this point in time(ie not my house)

Voltmeter?
Yup, own one not familiar on what I'd be probing on the above plug to verify though :( Would I be going from center prong to one of the legs?

Meter across the 2 blades should give you 230volts.
Meter one blade and the "L" prong should give you 110 volts.

220-240 you would get from hot to hot.
115-120 you would get from Hot to Neutral.
In either of your pics the Neutral or ground depending on how its wired would be the top conductor.
If what your plugging into is thought to be 220-240V each of the bottom conductors should be a 120 leg referenced to neutral or ground if ground is used as a neutral. If the bottom legs are referenced to another 120 leg you should see 220-240V

Neither option is really feasible at this point in time(ie not my house)

Thanks for all the help. The mystery is solved now I get to play with the new welder at high power:p

you sure the the cirsuit can handle the amperage?

30yr house, he'll just pop the breaker.

Depends entirely on the machine. Many come with 50A plugs and don't ever draw more than 20A. Dryer is usually a 30A circuit. If it is a large machine, you don't have to turn it all the way up and burn beads continuously for several minutes.
In any case, if the breaker is functioning properly, it will trip out before you can do any thermal damage to the branch circuit conductors.

Actually, dryer is a 30 amp breaker. Welder cranked up requires 17.7 @220V according to the instruction for it(Miller Passport)
So I should be ok as far as popping the breaker ;)
30 amp breaker is probably the one thing the contractor did RIGHT on this house:shaking:
