2003 Land Rover Discovery II

opinions?

carpoint says:

4 stars for safety
5 green boxes...(highest rating) for reliability
expect 15-18 mpg

tell me what you think. it would replace my Honda and 1st gen. (ifs) 4runner.

i'd be building it for a DD/expedition rig like most do...33's, safari guard, OME, ARB's, etc.

anyone own one? or wheeled with one?

HHMMM,.....5 green stars for reliability.....that's interesting.

I have a 00 D2, 100K and pretty much hassle free...valley gasket is just starting to leak, but other than a replaced trans at 84K,..it runs well, the 15-18 mpg......I don't know about that one.
I get about 14 ...
As far as safety....my wife drove into a parked car at about 10-15 mph...pushed the car about 3 ft and caved in the side of the car.....damage to the Disco...broke a lower light in the rear bumper.....seriously.
If you can get the maint. history etc, or better yet have an indy garage check it out for you... Good Luck

good thanks...

yah, i was surprised at the rating of 5 green...that just means, though, that there isn't enough consistancy in problems to make it downgrade to 5 lime or 4 tan squares.

Other than the dreaded three amigos, they seem to be pretty robust.

Some have had oil pump problems, and in one case, a replacement short block didn't have the oil passages for the cam drilled, but other than those minor issues, they seem pretty good.

If you want to use it for more than a DD, then a 2004 would be better as it will come equipped with the center diff-lock. You can convert an '03, but it is difficult.

I have one for a kid transporter. The only problems I have had were the front dome light and a bad fuel cap, (would not seal and caused check eng light to come on).
As far as safety, well my kids nanny was t-boned at 55 by a 06 f250 4x4. She was knocked 250 feet away. I reset the fuel pump switch and drove it home. The f250 was totaled. Motor even went into its cab. I had to replace rear pass. door, quarter panel, and wheel. Put on frame machine and it was still fine. I would by another one.

cheers,

I can see you've never done it! No more difficult than any other t-case swap.
