: Tikka T3 Tactical

Hello,

I've started some reading looking for my next gun. It will be used mainly for target shooting (~up to and maybe slightly over 1000m), but may also be used for some hunting deer and hopfully in the future moose at closer (~5-600m) distances.

Does anyone have any experience with the Tikkas? How do they shoot for an unmodified gun? It is available in a 223, 300 or 308, I would probably get the 308 because of the availability of ammunition, as well as the well known ballistics of the 308.

Is the T3 Tactical worth the extra $ over the Varmint, for what looks like an adjustible cheekpiece, larger bolt knob, and different scope mounts?

Any one have any more info or suggestions, I'm not sold on the Tikka, it just looks like a good place to start.

Thanks,

Dan

No experience with Tikkas but look at the Savage 10fp, best bang for your buck IMHO.

Savage 10FCP with HS Precision stock. 1:10 twist rate is excellent for 175gr SMK's - great out to 1000 yards. Barrels are button rifled - vs hammer rifled like the remi's. Like Bronko said - excellent value.

I dont know about the Tikka T3 Tac's but I do have a new Tikka T3 Lite
30-06 That I love. It shoots accurate as any rifle possibly can and is a nice gun when having to carry a long way to the stand or when walking and stalking.

Smoothest action on the market IMO.

I do have to admit though, the Savage was my next choice in guns but since I wasnt buying it for myself, I wasnt worried about the money issue.

Maybe it's just me but I think I'd want a little more bullet than a .308 for moose....

If its just meat hunting I don't see why a .308 wouldn't do the job. I'd still bring my .300WBY over a .308, but if you have 1 rifle to do the job it should be fine. Thats all in my never having ever shot a moose opinion.

I've never shot a moose myself either :laughing::laughing:

But I have seen a moose in person and those fawkers are HUGE :D

I have never shot a moose either, but would like to start hunting them in a few years. I think a 308 is enough gun, not sure out to what distance though. Hopefully with enough target practice I wouldn't have a problem placing a kill shot from 500m.

Can't comment on the moose hijack, but can comment on Tikka. I have owned a Tikka .22-250 T3 lite and That is the sweetest long gun I own (of about a dozen) The two most amazing things are the trigger and the accuracy. My paw-in-law just got a 30-06, still the same great trigger and accuracy! i'm a new Tikka fan!

Regarding the Moose....the .223 and .308 would be a bit small.

Tikka's are pretty nice, accurate rifles.

I'm going to start looking for an elk/moose gun in the near future and the T3 is definitely on my short list. As for a the .308 and moose. I don't know. It'd probably be the bare minimum cartridge you'd want to be carrying. I think it'd be alright if you anticipated short range shots 150 or so yards or less, but if you're wanting to reach out further, I think you need to carry some more gun. The calibers I'm looking into are the .300mag, .300wsm, and .338mag. I hope to get to Alaska some day to go after a big brown, so I'm kind of leaning toward the .338mag as it could handle this task nicely as well.

I already have a Remington Model 700 in .308 for deer, etc.

.223 for moose?! Might as well throw rocks. With proper bullet placement, sure it would take a moose, but I don't think you'd be giving yourself the best chance for a clean, quick kill. That fast moving .223 bullet hits a big moose bone and it's gonna disentegrate.

.300 WBY, 30'06, or 8mm Mauser(handloads only)

Personally would barely use a .223 for deer and definatly not for moose. .308 is much larger than what is needed for whitetails. Muley's would get a .308 though

I've got a Marlin 30-30 for deer, which is just fine considering the type of hunting I do (hardwoods, never see over 150m). Its easy to carry, and very reliable, the only thing I don't like is it doesn't have a clip for easy load/unload.

im sold on a tikka for my next rifle, Ive shot one before in .30-06 and it was awesome. Im debating on what caliber to get, either .300 winmag so I can do the big stuff and use smaller loads for whitetails or .25-06/6.5x55 swede for just whitetail and varmint.

But if I couldn't, savage is my next choice.

and a .308 for moose? I dont think im confident enough in my shooting to place one of those right on the money at 400+yrds to drop one. Id feel alot better with .300 winmag or .338 something.
