Anyone have any good first hand experence with an RZR yet?
Should I consider one before a Rhino 660?

I love going fast, but still want the utility of the larger Rhino.
Any advice?

I'm sure BTF1 will chime in as soon as he gets his... He traded in his harley on one of these bad mothers a few weeks ago.

I have a long travel rhino and I love it. Havent personally ridin in a RZR yet but the one downside I have 'heard' about them is they have weak frames and suspension. Custom Motorsports crumpled the frame on theres in a race along with another one racing that day. The rhino's are pretty beefy! I've high speed rolled my Rhino going about 40mph and it did nothing to it short of pulling the tire off bead and some scratches in the plastic. Flipped it over and it fired right up. I've been really happy with the rhino.

We have as much first hand info as you would need. We have been in the side by side industry for over 4 years. we have built over 100 custom Rhinos, rangers, prowlers and now RZR's. First off, the Two RZR,s that were damaged while racing were completely stock, racing in the CORR series in california against fully modified long travel rhinos. both cars were rolled very hard, cartwheel & barrel roll style. The damage was not any more than I would expect from a Rhino with a similar roll. granted there are a few spots on the RZR that could stand to be beefed up for extremely hard use. However we have repaired dozens of Rhino frames for similar issues. As far as performance goes the RZR is hands down the winner, Faster, Quicker, more responsive with better suspension in stock form than any thing else out there. For utility the full size Ranger has the market with the Rhino and Prowler close behind. The Rhinos have more aftermarket stuff available right now but the RZR will catch up soon. you will never get a back seat in a RZR so if toting the family around is a priority you should look Rhino/ Ranger/ prowler. If you need more info give us a call or check out our website www.jaggedx.com

I got my Rzr a little over a week ago. It is way better than I ever thought it would be. Its not really made for rock crawling but so far it 4wheels better than my sportsman did, and my dog rides in the back.
One thing I would like to do is a 2" lift, the center of gravity is so low as is, lift it 2" should be ok when I hit the dunes.
Later down te road I want to build my own cage for it and rock sliders.

Dont no much about the razr. My rhino on the other hand is bad ass, we use the fawk out of that thing everyday on the farm and use it hard(pullin trailers, haulin tools etc... )it has over 3,000 miles and its an 07. Very tough machine. Just my 2 cents:smokin:

Why do the two v-bars cross over the occupants head, for easy entyr/exit? Looks like if you leaned one against a tree or something it would be in your lap

I drove one in Moab for a bit at the UTV Rally. Loved the power. Felt very nimble. Lower center of gravity was nice. Looks small, but doesn't "feel" that small when you are in it.

Bed is pretty small if you are looking to do much hauling - ice chest, camping gear, etc.

Overall, it does look a bit "light duty" to me. Time will tell though.

Here is my full review (http://www.duneguide.com/ProductReview_Polaris_RZR800.htm). Lots more pictures that you posted from my site above.

RZR's are pretty worthless for towing and hauling (anything large anyway)...but there is really no comparison from a speed and handling viewpoint. I know JaggedX probably has more experience (both recreational and race) than anyone, and I would definately take what they say to heart.

Haulin' capacity is limited but the fun factor is not. It is never underpowered and out perform any stock UTV out there.

It loves rocks!

Nice pic, Ive had mine like that a few times. Iam pretty sure my frame is going to break, driving it like that all the time. When it does I will just make it better.
Welded up my brother sportsman frame last week, it was broken in 5 places, from jumping and rock crawling it.

From what I saw last weekend on the Rubicon, the RZR did good. It just needs more ground clearance.

Power delivery is much smoother in the rocks than a Rhino. Rhino's CVT just doesn't want to get going when pushed up against a rock. RZR & Ranger have lower gearing, EFI and maybe a better CVT setup for crawling.

Rhino's have better ground clearance and did really well. Definitely impressed with what these UTVs can do.

Nice meeting you Jon. Wish you could of made it farther up the trail with us.

Yeah the Rzr impressed me again. The low center of gravity is great. And the power is nice and smooth.

The bad thing is it sits so low, but after getting a feel for it, it really was a advandage. I just used the full skid plate and the throtall and it would crawl and side over anything I tried.
Here is Bill in a nice spot.

The regualar Rangers did great as well, they would climb and had good ground clearance.
Even ran in to my old jeep, now I miss it :(

Like Crowdog said, the RZR and also the fullsize rangers have lower gearing and EFI. It seemed to help out alot on the rocks. Not to bash the rhinos, but I was not impressed. In stock form the Ranger or rzr looks like it will go further and do much better. One older 500 non efi Ranger broke a cv and pulled the axle and ran in 3wd and looked like it went better than the Rhinos. Iam sure the lower gears are what made the diffrernce.

It was fun and a good trip.

Loving my RZR other than the crappy airbox setup. One hour at the Cinders and my air filter was so plugged that the RZR would not idle. Are you listening Bill? :D

Jaggedx
07-17-2007, 09:51 AM
The Cinders are about the worst condition you can have. The air intake for the RZR is located directly in the center of the Vehicle, right behind the seats and up pretty high. Aside from raising the intake snorkle I don't know how to make it any better.

I've actually got an idear or two on that. New airbox design inside the cab or a large Outerwears that fits over existing one.

I find that the deep silt beds in the desert are just as bad. I really don't know how you guys ran the Baja in your RZR even with one filter change. One hour in the Cinders can't be any worse. That's how long it took to clog my filter. :(

Wow, didn't know SxS stuff existed over here on Pirate. I was looking at a truck Kyle was looking at, and stubbled across this thread. Jon, overall, how was the Rubicon in the UTV's? Do you think the whole trail is a possibility or did you guys have to winch a whole bunch?

Well I know you asked Jon. But yeah the whole trail is doable its pretty easy in a sxs. I don't belive anyone winched, atleast I know none of the polaris rangers did. Not sure on the rhinos, didn't see them much after they got stuck. lol

Don't have a Rzr but have a Sportsman, Outlaw and my brother has had a few sleds. Polaris is very innovative, but they lack in quality and customer service. If they just put a little more effort in those area's they would be a much better company. As far as weak frames, I would not be surprised.

Side note, here is a perfect example of a"True" American Made Company that still gets outsold by the imports. If you truly believe in American Products you would get a Polaris over a Yamaha. Ya Ya I know many of the imports are now assembled in the USA.....

Tough part about a UTV ride through the Rubicon is not being street legal. If you go all the way through instead of in/out at the same spot, you are going to need to trailer at both ends.

I am up for going all the way in to Rubicon springs and then back out again.
There is a little bit of stuff past the springs(cadilac hill ect) but it could be done as a day trip from the springs for those who wanted to go.

cooler space could be a prob on this one though.
any one have Jeeps or trucks who could act as cooler support vehicles?

I will get up there one of these days! I tried getting ahold of you but you were in Tennessee.

Let's see...my TPS and ETC were off from the factory. An airbox clip disappeared on the first trip and the airbox sucked in mega Cinders dust. This clogged the filter and rendered the RZR useless within 3 hours of use. Polaris replaced had the dealer replace whole airbox assembly, added a Unifilter and the dealer took it out for 15 minutes and rechecked the filter. The Uni was covered in dirt! Polaris advised me to wait 2-3 weeks for their new airbox/intake design. There's a large gap between access panel and framework behind the seats. The foam around the intake scoop fits loosely and allows dust from behind to enter into the cabin area. The airbox supposedly draws clean air from the cab. It ain't happenin! Polaris is working with me and the dealer ; so I can't complain.

You forget...my wife is Italian. They DO know people!!! :mr-t::D

Sorry to hear all that but from everything I have seen so far Polaris is very commited to this product and is really trying to make it the best it can be.
