: Trailer wireing problem
5trucks 07-10-2007, 10:39 AM I have a 2003 dodge qc 4x4 1500 that came with the factory tow package and for some reason my left turn signal and my trailer brakes wont work. I hooked up a meter to both at the plug ( 7prong ) and no power to either. So i went to the factory wireing harness ( blue clip with four wires, ground power, stop and elec brake ) and tested for power there. I have stop, power and ground but no power to wire when brakes are depressed. I checked all the fuses and all are good according to the meter. Called the dealer and they need to look at it to see if they can figure it out. The problem is my Tekonsha Prodigy controller wont register the trailer is hooked up because of the open circut. Any ideas or quick fixes that wont cost me a bundle?
Gummi Bear 07-10-2007, 12:37 PM Have you plugged it into a trailer to test it out yet?
The brakes need some resistance to activate the controller (the magnetic coil in the brakes provides this resistance)
If you're just talking about your brake lights, trace it out. Take the time to carefully remove the loom, and inspect the wiring on your truck for any pinches, cuts or abrasions on all of the wiring.
If the issue's on the trailer side, it's likely a loose (or missing) ground. Don't rely on the trailer ball for grounding, nor should you rely on the wire back to the vehicle harness, it's best to have both. Pull a ground wire to each of the lights and also to the brakes from the harness, and bond the ground to the trailer frame at each location.
5trucks 07-10-2007, 02:19 PM I tested all the things i felt comfortable testing as to not take a chance on voiding the damn warranty. It was on the truck side. Dealer diagnosed it as the Integrated Power Module and it is a $260.00 part not counting 3hrs labor. Warranty covers it but i have a $100.00 deductable. Thanks for the help.
FYRMAN 07-10-2007, 06:49 PM as soon as you said left turn signal was inop, I knew it was off to the dealer with you. this is the first time someone has told me what the actual problem was. thank you for the update.

Is it like the problem people have with the late 90's F150 when the signals go out on the tow package? All the fuses are good, but no damn signal.
5trucks 07-10-2007, 08:03 PM All i know is i asked the same question on a few different boards and all i kept getting were check your connections. Granted, those are some common mistakes and did need to be addressed but i hate it when people find the problem and dont post the solution.

they are run through the charge wire fuse. 30 maxi, IIRC. Is that what you were talking about?
This deal is actually in the power distribution center under the hood. You get power all the way through the fuse, but it doesn't get power through to the wire on the other side. I've actually traced it out that far looking for a broken connection. Never had a hand in the repair.

Yep, that problem.
Totally a different fix, but the same problem in the idea that the common person looking for what should be a simple fuse or connection problem can't seem to find anything that is actually wrong.
ibrocun 07-11-2007, 09:30 PM sounds like the same problem I'm having. 2006 Dodge 3500. No marker lights or left turn.
I assumed the problem was the el cheapo wiring in my trailer (no Aaron, not the one you built!). I rewired my trailer, upgrading to a 10 gauge ground, and running the wires through a junction box. Same problem. It's in the truck.
Where do I start?

Start by checking the fuses. Then trace the white wire with the pink tracer from front to back. Then check to see if you have power as soon after the fuse box as you can. I don't remember how I did it, but I was able to pull the fuse box pretty easily, and checked at the back side of the box. No power there, send it to the dealer.

Boy, do I feel dumb. It was a fuse. I rewired my whole trailer and the problem was a blown fuse in my truck..
On the other hand, it was the trailer that blew a fuse in the first place.
5trucks 07-13-2007, 09:50 AM For those interested, my problem was fixed with the turn signal but the electric brakes still didnt work. Took it back to the dealer and dealt with the cool electrical guy and he told me that if you get a factory tow package from the factory all wires are hooked up. If the DEALER installs a factory tow package ( all the same equiptment ) then they only run the electric brake wire ( blue in my case ) if the customer asks them too. Otherwise they only zip tie it and hook up all the necessary things. This was what they did to mine so he saved me 75 bucks by telling where to hook up the wire and how and where to change the fuse.
Haha! just noticed my " check your connections " comment. I'm a dick!
