and replacing them really, really really sucks.

That is all.

I take it your pressurizing expansion tank took its toll.

After a couple, it doesn't hurt as much.

The only thing that sucks is if you dont have a big enough breaker bar for the torque to yield bolts!

It is finished, it runs, it dies not pressurize the tank anymore.
Do they draw straws at the shop when they get these in? I was talking to the parts guy here at LR Richmond, he hates them more than me and he doesn't have to do them anymore!

I would rather do two transfer case swaps.:p

Glad it's done chuck....what'll break next :D
It really is the lesser of 2 evils...pull the motor and those upper bell housing bolts are just as nasty to get back in with out pulling the top end.

That RR has come along way since its' tragic beginning :D

They suck if youre only thinking about 5 o'clock coming, but if you are methodical and take pride in your work it can actually be a nice feeling when it is all back together, knowing that you did a great job on it and that there wont be any problems. I like that feeling, i guess thats why I do this for a living!

Why would you put those back in? I'd buy ARP studs. Stronger and never need replacing.

Until the studs corrode where they go through the heads! Nothing wrong with the TTY bolts.

Why would they corrode if they aren't in the water jacket? I believe they are black oxide coated anyway. The only corroded thing in my '87 engine I pulled was intake bolts, for obvious reasons.

Ummm, Ok Stuart Smalley. Repeat after me "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and Doggone it People Like Me!"

Are you sure about this part?:flipoff2:

I worked with a tech at LR PDX who could do complete head gasket jobs in under two hours. You did not want to get in his way. Even the apprentices could do them in an eight hour day.

Me, I'm just glad to make book time on the job.

Pendy and KC can probably do a head job in 20 minutes:D

BTW-head studs do corrode and are a PITA to deal with. Worse in the Jags.

Are you kidding me?!?

I would pay just to watch that, I cannot imagine

I always prefered head gaskets. They pay out very well if you are good at it. Book time versus actual time is fairly drastic. I always searched for these in the work order pile. Anther fun one was the o-rings on the heater matrix in a rangie. It called for some retarded amount of time to remove the dash, but it could be done in 30min or less if you had the right screw driver and a gumby arm.

He claimed he'd done one in less than 90 minutes! Takes me that long just to summon the courage to do another one.

In one day, I saw him do two and take several breaks throughout the day as these two jobs would finish his week.

I have seen the two hour head job. It can be done. Techs loved them. Me, it is a full day for sure and I prefer engine out.

I remember the day I got laughed at when I said Head jobs could be done so quickly. Now everyone is jumping in and say hell yea, no problem.

WHAT THE HELL

LR techs have been doing this since forever.

I've since then met folks who claimed they could do them faster than even you. In one case, I saw it done, or damned near.

That said, I'm not that good and not even gonna claim it.

So, what are the common tricks to getting it done so fast? Is it just repetition? I know I took longer because I was cleaning up a lot of parts that needed it, but would it not be necessary to do some of that anyway?

64rovr
07-11-2007, 09:38 PM
Repetition, knowing the tools you need beforehand, knowing what order to take things off in, knowing exactly what needs to be taken off and what can be left as-is.

At the last shop I worked at, I saw the other tech change a headgasket (just one) on a V8 without removing the intake manifold!

That is about the oldest trick in the book.
That's been done since V8's were invented.

Sure,...just lurking. I said a pissing contest, not who has the bigger dick contest. I just thought it was/is comical......:shaking:...I take it you also turn wrenches for $...so who really cares then...mostRover owners I run across want to "play the part", but they don't eevn know what a fawkin head gasket is or where it's located...happy wrenching

You're telling me. I keep staring at that fuel rail wondering when it's going to install itself along with my sweet Ford injectors and Magnacore wires.

Maybe the cobbler's elves will visit me tonight...
