What's the logic behind an engine (140k) burning synthetic oil that previously did *not* with dino oil?

Synthedic oil is much thinner/ lighter, I took a class at chevron and they said to start the motor out with synthetic, but if it has high miles, dont bother. I thenk you can use a blend though, dont remembr.
