Hollister Hills' Future in Hands of State Lawmakers

Jul 11, 2007
By Michael Van Cassell

Hollister - If state lawmakers can't agree on changes to the California off-highway program before year's end, Hollister Hills on Cienega Road may close.

Off-road vehicle enthusiasts and environmentalists have butted heads over changes to a Senate bill that would overhaul the state's 36-year-old off-highway program. Funds for state off-road vehicle recreation areas come from fuel tax and registration and entrance fees, but will expire Dec. 31 unless groups come to a consensus and lawmakers pass the bill.

The problem is, in its current form, no group on either side supports the bill, according to a state bill analysis.

Jeff Gaffney, chief ranger of the Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area, said an agreement needs to be reached so the park can stay open.

Gaffney said he has a difficult time understanding why environmentalists, whom he often considers his allies as a state park ranger, oppose funding off-road vehicular areas.

"This whole facility would cease to exist," Gaffney said. "It's kind of sad. This is where my heart and soul is, and I believe in the people who come here."

If the groups can't come to a consensus, the Hollister Hills Off-Road Association will try to educate the public to prevent the park from closing, said Margie Ghione, the group's vice president.

"It would be horrible for San Benito County," Ghione said. "It's a family sport, especially in this area."

Ghione said Hollister Hills provides another option for many local youths looking for an activity.

Brent Schoradt, a deputy policy director for the California Wilderness Coalition, said the bill would double available funds for off-highway vehicle recreation area land acquisition without doing enough to protect the environment.

"We're trying to make sure there's a proper balance," Schoradt said.

Schoradt noted that the current version of the bill could cut funding for law enforcement for off-road vehicle areas and restoration of damaged caused by such vehicles.

Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, who represents San Benito County, voted against the bill the Senate passed. The bill passed 21-17 and made its way into the Assembly.

Under its current form, the bill would triple off-road vehicle registration fees. When Denham voted against the bill, it would have doubled park entrance fees. That language has been removed.

"The idea of jacking up fees is not something (Denham) usually supports," said Stacey Hendrickson, his press secretary. "There has not been consensus from various groups on this bill, but if they come to a consensus, he's willing to take a fresh look at it."

this is for alllllll california offroad parks actually. December 31st the environmentalists may win it all... after you can't leave your home anymore due to closures of everything from streets to front yards what will they then be trying to stop? this is so fucking rediculous.

it's going to lead to so many criminal acts they're probably going to wish they would have left it alone. group think, blind leadership, utter facism. I'm so tired of it. Some greenie's wife got f-cked in the @$$ by a dirt bike rider and she liked it... ever since then he's waged a 1 way war. It doesn't help that people like us are willing to lie down and take it. Might as well just start a legitimate extreme war between us and the environmentalists.

I mean they've already won everywhere else.. they are so f-cking blindly funded by corporations that think they're doing good, and are such fantastic bullshitters that they've pretty much taken over california already.

I just can't understand why, knowing that the contract was running out, nobody informed the general population until a few weeks ago. I'm trying as hard as I can to buy a chunk of land up here so the greenies can get fucked trying to stop my fun.

This really sucks, I was there yesterday and had a blast. It's scary how in a short period of time that so many areas are under threat of closure. Having some private land to wheel would be nice and I'd kick down some cash (or help with a clean up or both) to have an area that wouldn't be under pressure to close.

lets do a protest. we all show up at the state capital(sacramento, ca.) with our 4x4 on the street and on trailer(for the green stickers). lets keep it peaceful and in order so it does not bite us in the ass later. lets show them how many of us pay for the cal. reg. for our shit so we can wheel. every other group out there do these type of protest(helmet law, gay rights, racial right ect........)if this sound like a good idea let start a new post and get a date ASAP and get people to sign up and we show up in NUMBERS. we would not let someone steal our rig that all our time and money is in so why sit down and only read about our trails being closed. if thats the case, you should sell YOUR rig. because it will be no good to have in california

the date should be on a weekday and we show up around 7:00 am and get all the parking spot around the capital. talk about a parking cluster f@%k. they we be happy to send us to the trail.

maybe Lance can post up how many member there are on the pirate4x4.com page in just california

damn right. since we barely stand a chance (at best) battleing this legally. Be prepared for some extreme disorderly shit after the legal aspect is over.

I've be brainstorming w/ a few other diabolical villians and we've come up w/ a few really bad ideas. :)

We should have our own meeting about other ideas on how to stop the actions they're taking.. or at least make them thing twice about it.

I'll get ahold of a few key players and see if we can't put something together soon, behind closed doors. Everyone that's interested in saving our public land will want to be there. Preferably people with more sensible ideas than that of myself :)

Need to find out who, whether it be an individual or a group, is in charge of the decision to close it, then take it up with them.
