OK i have been looking for a decent trail rig for alittle while. I have found two vehicles that i think that may fit my criteria. I found a 79 bronco and a 88 blazer. Here is alittle about both.

79 Bronco
400M, edelbrock and headers, C6 with b&m floor shifter, 4" lift, bald 35" mickeys. 4:11 gear and traclock. Original 9" out back with 3:55 gears. Rust on the rear fenders. Price is 850 obo.

88 Blazer
Truck is missing two windows the drivers door and the rear window. Pass rolls up fine. Drivers door is damaged to bad to put a window back in. All doors do open and close good, including the drivers. Top fits fine, bolt on fine. Has a 350, TH350, 203 transfer case. 10 bolts front and rear. The front Diff is busted but still steers and drives. Just cant put it in 4wd. Its a old lift not sure how much, lift is from Rugged trail. It clears 35s without triming and doesnt scrub. Tires are 33/12.5/15 Delta Sieraterains (A/T) about 80% tread but they are kind of dry. Comes with additional Elderbrock airgap intake and a second Qjet carb. Also have the adapter plate to fit the Qjet to the Intake. Price is 500 obo.

the guy that has the bronco said that he 8 lugged the front and put a 60 in the rear. HE pulled the 60 for another project. He switched the gears to match 60 rear that he had in the rear. he is going to give me a set of 411 to go in the rear too. The drive shafts are not in the the bronco right now. It is not able to be driven in 4wd.

Both sound like deep money pits.

78-79 Bronco. One of the best full size Bronco's built, IMO. And the best looking. I owned a 79 XLT with the 400 and C6. Got a whopping 12-14mpg, whether I was towing my 22' boat or just driving it. Didn't matter. They are plagued with rust over the rear wheelwells. And that damn rear window that would work/not work. Most of the parts from the F-series pickups will fit. Since the owner has started to mod the vehicle, I'd be a bit leary of it. However, if it does have two Dana 60's in it, it's probably worth it for that alone. Especially if you are gonna go with BIG tires. I'm not gonna start a debate on the 400/351M engines. I'd recommend doing a 460 swap. L&L makes all the parts. The C6 is one of the best automatic transmissions out there for big power.

Blazer....Hmmm. Lot's of Chevys out there too. I liked the older Blazers also. And the pickup (not the 88 or later sheetmetal) stuff will also interchange on some of the areas. Chevy didn't change the Blazer or Suburban in 88 like they did the C/K pickups. I have a 1988 R30, it's the one ton chassis and it also used the older sheetmetal. IIRC, the stock blazer had a 10blt front and 12blt rear axle. Not Dana 60's by any stretch, but good for what GM designed the vehicle to do. Big rubber will absolutely kill the 10blt (seems that this one is already dead). The 350/350 is a dynamite combo. Not as HD as the TH400, but non the less worthy. I would imagine that the original vehicle was TBI and someone 'hacked' a carb into it. Take a good look at what damage they might have done to the wiring. And how they set up the fuel pump.

It's pretty much a 'toss-up' depending on what you want the finished vehicle to look like, what your skill level is, and how deep your pockets are. There are a whole lot of good 'running' vehicles out there for a bit more money. Find one that someone else has flushed a bunch of their cash into.

If it has to be one of the two I would vote bronco. x2 on the 460 swap, cut the rust out of the wheelwells and go for it
