Mike, Breeze in B.C. does this for around $200. Shipping to B.C. will be cheaper than cross border (believe it or not).

mud-magnet 06-08-2002, 03:59 PM they charge 200$ to cut the 2 gears and weld them back together???? i can get it done alot cheaper than that just is it going to work if i get my uncles welding shop to do it???? i think he'll be able to but he might do something and rune them and then i'm out gears again........
is that 200 can. or USD???
thank

hey, buddy. i got Breeze to do my cutting/welding
($200.00 Canadian + PST. & GST.)
1984 sj410 gears you will need:
-Input Shaft, Suzuki part #:29111-80450
-Counter Gear, Suzuki part #:29121-80050
-High Output Gear, Suzuki part #:29221-80050
mud-magnet 06-08-2002, 09:21 PM yeah, i think when ever i find a 84 case i'll get my uncle to do it at his shop.......... he did both my drive shafts, and owns the biggest welding shop on the island.....
think i'll give it a shot......
l8r..... thanks guys
rockzooki 06-08-2002, 10:40 PM take into consideration the total cost of the 84 case and labor to reman the gears. you can order the 4 to 1's for less than 500 us.

If your uncle is confdent he can keep the run-out on the gears at/near stock levels (0.005"?) then go go it.

Root Moose 06-09-2002, 07:22 AM Mike, here's another way to make the gear set that might be more to your uncle's liking. If I'm not mistaken this is how SBE does it as well.
Pressed on 4.16 gear set creation (http://ironbark.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/~jeff/xfer2.htm)

mud-magnet 06-09-2002, 11:01 AM that looks like alot more work......... i can get 2 84 cases for 75$ each(about 45 USD)
i think he'll be able to do it........... should work out, if not i'll get anouther one and ship it to breeze........
but i can get eh cutting and welding for free if my uncle can do it, he built both my shafts for free already...............
well thanks anyways guys

Remember you have to make a heat treatment after welding, you will lost it once heated.

What axle gearing are you runnning Mike?
mud-magnet 06-10-2002, 02:03 PM right now john i got all stock gears, i'm going to get a set of std. kick gears........so thats 5.13........ and then once i get the 4.16 i think it'll be low enough for here.......... even though one guy here runs 160:1 in a YJ with 35" SX's...........
anyways what heat treatment do i have to do?????
thanks.....

Not quite sure what he is on about- would like clarification too. You are not welding any of the gear interfaces so I don't know why you'd need to do any heat treatment.

If you go slow and donīt heat the gear up to much, as well as let it air cool back to room temp under a Kevlar blanket or similar (no forced cooling), then you should have no prob with heat treatment...
But back to the run-out issue... If you donīt follow the process that Root Moose linked to, that is to press the gear onto the shaft, then youīre gonna have a hell of a time ensuring the run-out spec. Itīs important as hell that you get this correct, or youīll have an unbelievably noisy and short-lived t-case..

I think it involves shaking a dead chicken over it or something. Heat treating is something a black art. Luckily you shouldn't need to do anything more than what billj described. I hope your uncle has a lot of "charity" time available. Better yet, tell him where to get them for $400 and he'd probably rather buy them for you. In any case, let us know how it works out.
Oh yeah, since its you Mud:flipoff2:
mud-magnet 06-12-2002, 04:13 PM lol.......... whats that for???? is it because i most likely got you when you were a newbie????????

Gozuki 06-12-2002, 06:46 PM TIG, then wrap with fiberglass insulation till cool will work great. Also, I second the press method, it's really the best way, and a competent machinist could do it in under an hour...Mike
mudlite 06-13-2002, 05:24 AM I guess the real question is, does your Uncle work at a welding shop or a machine shop? IMHO do it right, and spend the 200.
mud-magnet 06-13-2002, 06:48 AM well i'll talk it over with him when i go to pick up my drive shaft.......... and i'm not spending the 200 cause i don't have a job, and i'm only a student.......an't going to happen.......
well thanks for the info guys.......
