Looking to swap in a SM465 into a '76 CJ-5 with a AMC 360, T-150 Tranny, Dana 20 transfer case.
How big of a project is this and what things are gonna be needed?
What is a good price for this SM465 tranny used?

Thanks

Who gives a shait about the price of the tranny ,you can get one for $50

Its the $1,500 in adapters you should be concerned about

Yeah. Adapters. However...Why not 'consider' an alternate trans? Say a T18 or NP435? Both Cheap. The NP435 is super easy to find (and has a lower 1st gear). The SM465 is an outstanding transmission. And they are plentiful. The T18 was a 'stock' transmission in Jeeps. Look for a Ford T18 or T19 (not as low, unless it came out of a F500). I (literally) picked my Ford T18 up from the ground at a local junk yard for $35.

You've got to 'adapt' no matter what....Don't limit your search.

Unless you've got someone that's gonna give ya a SM465 for a six pack.

So the SM465 isn't worth it unless it's close to a freebie then?
What do you recommend that will get me a lower 1st?
And yes, i know the adapters will kick my balls with wallet!

Ford T18. You can adapt it to the Dana20 for around $600. IIRC, it will pretty much bolt to the T150 bellhousing...But check with Novak or Parts Mike on that. I believe you will also need a different pilot bearing/bushing. Which Novak, Advance, or Parts Mike sell.

My 76 CJ5 has a mid 80's Ford T18 that I used the mainshaft from my Jeep T18a and the aluminum adapter from Advance Adapter.

However I am pretty much stock Ford from the 5.0L back to the Dana20 Tcase.

Get a Ford T18. It has a 6.3 first gear, mounts to the stock bell housing by drilling and tapping 1 new mtg. hole. I adapted mine to my 258 and D300. I think the AMC bell housings are all the same. Go to Novak for info (how to identify the tranny you need, clutch and install info) and the adapter. It's probably less than $500, includes new pilot bushing and you won't need to change driveshafts. The SM465 is a good one but the chevy mounting pattern is so far off you'll need a new bell housing. I'm speaking from D300 experience which was a bolt-in except for drilling one hole and installing the included new T18 mainshaft which gave me the opportunity to freshen up the tranny. Novak says don't even bother with the Jeep T18 and they'll tell you why.

a T18 will bot directly to your T150 bellhousing without drilling any holes.... i swapped a T18 into my CJ.. only had to get the Tcase adapterwhich set me back about $450 from AA

Ford T18's are plentiful and standard. Jeep T18's are hard to find, have proprietary parts, and have a 10 spline threaded output shaft for a Dana 20 t-case. You'll have to adapt it anyway, might as well do it the easy way.

As pointed pout above, the Ford T18 will bolt up to your bell. You'll need a special pilot bushing, an adapter shaft and adapter tailhousing (Novak or AA), and a different clutch disc.

X3 - Get a T18. I'm running one in the GPW and am very impressed with it.

By the way, be sure you Loctite the adapter bolts to the transmission or else your transfercase will try to liberate itself on the trail. Ask me how I know.

Well we picked up a Ford T-18 that already had the adapter for the Dana 20 for $180. The tranny didn't have the bellhousing, but from what i am reading the bellhousing we have will bolt right to this correct?

if you have the t150 or t176 bellhousing it should bolt up, theyt may all be the same but I know it'll work on those

that adaptor will not work with your dana 20 though...and of course a ford dana 20 won't work in you jeep so you'll still have to get an adaptor

Why would the adapter not work, the tranny was used in a Jeep before we bought it.

if it was used in a jeep then more than likely you have the jeep T18 since it also came with a 1" thick adapter plate for the D20

yes it will work and ayou found a great deal.....If its a T18a with the granny gear first

Ok guys, big change to the above posts. From what we are seeing on this tranny is that it is the Jeep T-18, but with the 6.32 1st gear, making it a T-18A transmission. So how does this change the plans to bolt this into the Dana 20 and an AMC 360? Other than part availability of this trans is there any reason to try and return this to who we bought it from? This is mostly a pavement pounder and sees light trails and a little mud, no rocks.

Thanks

Does it look like the picture that I posted:
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r320/HackFabrication/TrannyandT-case.jpg

If it does, it's got the correct adapter for the Jeep Dana20.

Since you stated it was in a Jeep before, it must have been adapted correctly. The Ford T18 will work with your stock bellhousing. I believe you will have to drill one new mounting hole, I'm not certain about this.

You will need a different pilot bearing for the end of the crankshaft. The T150 clutch disk is 1 1/8"-10spline. The Ford input shaft uses a 1 1/16"-10spline. Don't be lured into using the Jeep disk 'because it fits'. You'll be tearing it all apart again. Get a regular Ford 10 1/2" or 11" disk (depending on what pressure plate you're using. Probably a good time to resurface the flywheel and install a completely new clutch anyway.

These are pic of what we got. In the first pic near the bottom on the right side, while looking at, it says T-18A.

Is that the unit from Wade (meangreen)?

He's done tons of those and isnt to far from you (Lloyd).

Fire him a PM on cja and see if he can help you out. He was just selling a jeep t-18 for a d20 not to long ago.

If your going throught the hassles of doing a tranny swap, save your self the time and hassles and go a d300. This way when you want lower gearing you can put a 4 to 1 in it and not worry.

what hassles?...his current Tcase will already bolt to his transmission
