: slammed Chevy = lifted Toy??

Yeah, another chevy spring swap question, and yes I tried searching. I've got mine nearly done, but its not enough lift using the Stock toy and stock chevy shackles. My runner is back to dragging its ass.

Anyhow, since the Chevy spring is configured on the OEM to have the shackle above the hanger instead of below it, I wondered if anyone has looked at using a Chevy LOWERING kit shackle like this one:
http://store.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/BEL-6500.jpg
I am concerned about doing this because this shackle is designed for tension, but in the Toy application it would be in compression.

Would this shackle work?

Did you put the 2" blocks in? Why not just make your own shackles?

My Roomate has a Chevy with a Shackle flip on the rear...this makes it a std compression style. Well, his ass drags too so he is looking into buying "lowering" shackles also...try JC whitney..they are dirt cheap...

As far as making shackles, if you look at the pic above, you see that its an internal bushing thing on one end and external on the other. This is beyond my fabricating skills.

Yeah, I probably could make a mongo 11 or 12 inch shackle, but it just doesnt seem like a good idea.

use a block welded to the axle perches or lower your spring mounts or use a different type spring....you need blocks with the chevys, plain and simple.

not true that you have to use blocks! I bought some
front toyota shackles that are longer than stock from four wheel
parts wholesale and cut out the center support fripped them
and usd some metal pipe to put in the middle of the shackle
" pipe goes inside the shackle and the bolts slip into them
witch prevents the shackle from calapsing" or if you can
weld just weld in a new support. works very well but I
think the lowering shackles work good to:smokin:

I have had toyota's...the 88 sas I sold had chevys with around 11" shackles, dropped rear hanger and 44044's front, and it still was in need of a block. My 1st toy was brand new in 1985......it's the one you all want now:D

well MY 85 4-RUNNER has 44044's and chev's in the rear I love
the set up! got 6100 bilstien's " dam those shocks are long"
you also could lower the shackle mount of the frame:D all in all
it really comes down to how much lift you want and how big the
tires are:smokin:

those shackles will work fine(ive got them), just make your hanger design similar to a spring hanger for the front. or you can incorporate them easily in a dual shackle setup...you can ditch all those goofy brackets in that kit unless youre inboard/outboarding your springs for some reason?

I'm using Chevy lowering shackles in my dual shackle set up and they work great, go for it! Oh and by the way to even out the lift of the chevy's in the rear to my 44044's in front, I had to use a 2" block also...........

I just finished my chevy swap and I used those chevy lowering shackles in my Double Shackles. Along with everything else I used a 2" block and the rear sits a good 4-5" higher.

Higher then before or higher then the front? And what springs are you using in the front???

i had what i thought was the dope dual shackle setup...maybe someone here will vouch for the flex i got. I moved my shackle hanger 2 inches forward, and used a 8" shackle(that i made) with another poly bushing where the shackles joined. I blew up some rear drivelines, and almost ripped a hole in my gas tank before i decided to ditch them. The lateral control of my axle was not good enough, so when the passenger rear tire would climb something, it would pull the axle sideways enough to pull the rear driveshaft into the gastank.
results===
My truck drives much better on the street, less body roll, and it tracks straighter now. Sure i miss the flex a little bit, but it climbs better now, and handles my attempts of "ralllying" better too. I suggest making sure your driveshaft doesnt do what mine did, and i consider the extra flex they gave me just something to "WOW" the bolt on TJ crowd...just something to think about.

also, while i had a lockrite in the rear, it would chirp tires more often with the dinky-link

But damn this setup will flex!!!!

i concur with the driveshaft and passenger spring bashing and rubbing the gas tank, the dual shackle thing looks good on the ramp but causes more hassles than its worth in real world wheeling...
