View Full Version : Offset wheels for the rear

The wheels I got with my 39.5' have different offsets front to rear to even up the track width. I like the way wheels stick out evenly but you can forget rotating the tires unless you like the bulldog look. The truck does well offroad with this setup but I'm looking to get 42's and have a set of wheels that have even offset. So anyway should I bother with keeping the staggered offset wheels or run the ones I have in the shed or would it matter ?

For competition mud racing, I think it's a good idea for the rears to track right behind the front. But, for general trail use, it's actually probably better if the rears don't quite track where the fronts do. If the track width were the same, the rears would cut corners sharper & that could cause issues getting around trees & such. It's not a huge deal either way - couple inches this way or that. But, you may notice a difference on occasion.

Just my $.02.

Why is that?

(just curious)

If it's a deep pit, you move less mud that way. The front clears the path & then the rears follow. So, there's less resistance on the truck moving forward. On a shallow mud drag, it's more of a control issue. If the fronts are trying to follow the ruts & the rears are tracking a different path, it could make the truck want to dance around a bit. A lot of guys run different width tires front to rear, but the smart ones still try to line the center of the fronts up with the center of the rears.

Ah, very interesting. I go to the mud races, but I've never entered. I probably will in september though. I don't think I'll do very good at all, but that don't matter, it's all for fun.

Yeah, it's all in fun. We have a LOT of guys who enter at the local races who really didn't "build" for mud. But, they all seem to have a good time :)
