Pull all the leaves except the main leaf from both sides, make a wood or metal spacer the thickness of the leaves you removed and put it into the pack. Then cycle the suspension as far as possible from full droop to full stuff (bump stop), one side up one side down, and get measurements (allow for the compression of the bumpstop), take those measurements and find a shock that is no longer than your shortest measurement when compressed, and as close as possible to your longest measurement when extended. Then make some mounts that position the shocks so they will not bottom out before the bump stop stops the axle...

ouch that hurts my brain, do you really have to take everything apart?

just ramp it on something w/o shocks, measure the distance at full compression and at full droop also measure at static, sutract compressed from droop, thats your travel, then get a shock with at least that much travel and make your mounts in such a way so it can travel enough and down, pretty easy actually, i dont know why youd take apart the pack and cycle it, that wouldnt even be real traver because it does nothing to take spring rate and weight into account

First you want "proper"...now you want easy !
make-up your mind...

I pull the packs apart to get the fullest extent of the main leaf. If you can drive up a ramp and bottom your springs, you need stiffer springs. imho

Ramp it but... Say you are measureing for the front shock lengths. So, drive the rear of the vechicle up the ramp. This way the weight transfers to the front causing the front to flex more than it would if you went up the other way. Make sure nothing is limiting it ie...brakelines etc...

I buy the longest shocks I can find, then I change everything to make them fit. <IMG SRC="smilies/smile.gif" border="0">
