: really strange noise

Hey guys I'm getting an odd noise coming from my 22RE. The engine runs really rough and has a weird popping/scratching type noise that I think is coming from the fan. I checked and the fan was kinda loose but not really that bad. Also, on the underside of the hood I noticed what looks like coolant splattered on it in a few places. Driving it last night, the truck has a really rough (if a little low) idle, power to the lights would die down a bit at stops. Do any of you guys have an idea as to what my problem(s) could be? Thanks.

just a guess from your description, alt sounds bad. bearing can make that noise, pull the belt and see if the noise goes away. could also be the water pump cause of coolent, but the light problem...could be both.

I checked on my coolant level and its really low so I'm guessing that part of the problem could be in the water pump.

bad motor mounts? A buddy of mine noticed that his motor mount went bad because the engine would move enough for the fan to hit the radiator....just something to check

sounds like bad waterpump to me too, I would check all the bearings on everything. If a bearing has any play at all it's shot. could also be A/C pump, alternator, fan clutch, or even the belt tensioner bearing.

I'm not sure about bad motor mounts since i don't know how they could be related to a loss of coolant or oil but I'll check it out. I know it's not the fan clutch (hopefully) cuz I replaced it about 6 months ago. I drove it a few blocks and when I parked it, coolant came gushing out so I'm assuming that the water pump is definitely bad. A friend said that the amount of oil loss that I had could be a result of a headgasket problem. Personally, I suck with engine work, so it went in this morning to get looked at.
