Well hey Gang, just wanted to let you all know my newest experiance. I was asked to sponsor and pit for my good friends Destruction-derby car this year. So what the hey I have always thought that if ya can fix a rig trail side to make it back to civilization, then ya should be able to fix a rig in the pits with all the tools and equipment. I have been wanting to do this for a long time since I was 18-19 years old.
My dream has come true. My first race ever and I won. How cool is that. Our teams Car is a 1973 Lincoln Continental, with a juiced 460 and auto. I did all the welding and he did the rest. Open rear end as of now, but that will change with welding. To get the win it was a spectactular example of brutal driving. I was out in the lead after three of the 8 laps after starting 4th in the pole. I then got spun around by some dude, said the hell with it and kept the "donut" going and got back in line 4-5. I then saw them get jamed up, slid in on the inside and bearmshoted off the side of an imperial to take 2nd. I was tromping the gas peddle through the straights and let off in the corners to tighten em up as needed. Near the end I knew I was down a spot and saw my opening. The leader came around the last tire towards the finish line thought he had the win, well as he was just about to finish the corner I came in at about 35 and jacked him in the rear quarter panel and spun him around. I then went 10 more feet and took the checkered flad. After that the winner heads to the center of the track for the trophy. I pasted the center with a huge donut in the dirt for the crowd, and shut the switched down. I climed out of the car and waved at the crowd.
Shawn won a heat race during normal racing, I won the Pitman challenge race. Funny thing is I was late to the Derby as I was "rallying a Scout" and ditched it on a dirt road. Popped a tire. Got there 1/2 hour late, and had to switch my name on the pitman card. It was a blast. They anounced Back Country Binders 4x4 when Shawn won. When I won they anounced Back County Binders and said my name as John Black. All the mean while all my buddies yelled in unison from the side " Let the Trophy Girl go Fleck" and then when the business sponsor names were read they yelled "Back Door Binders" Oh well I got to hug the hottie trophy girl and collect the trophy. It was the coolest thing being the crowd favorite car, and standing in the middle of the arena with the crowd watching and lights beaming. It was sweet as the tow trucks came in to collect the carnage(busted up rigs) I had reaked and take them off the track for the next race. We also won doulble the money since it was a new car. Shawn won $50, I won $50 and shawn gets Drivers pay about $95. Not bad for a first night out. One really cool thing is we were the only car to win 2 races that night. Oh and another cool fact, I had told shawn we should make fun of the imports cars with their wing and coffe can mufflers. I welded up a wing on the back of the car to poke the fun at em. After winning we kept telling the other drivers that its all in the extra downforce generated by the wing. It was weird after retuning to the pits all these young kids, women, and such came to watch us and cheer at us as we readied the car for the finallie. We decided to save the car and then went up to talk with the fans and kids. I may have talked to a few of the women but.....i will save that for campfire talk.
Ih content. The president runs a 1/2 ton IH pickup and has been running the same truck for 2 YEARS. WOW that IH can take a beating. Its a 440 with 727 under the hood but oh well. So as you can guess I have two or so IH pickups here 3/4 ton that we will be making into a derby winning machine. It should brutilize the competition and take home the trophys easy enough.
Apoligies if this all is pieced together, or spelling stinks, but its just exciting remembering it all so vividly. I am buying a copy of the nights video for my archives. Some day when I am old I will relive that day again and again.
Thanks all for listing.
PS I know i dont tell quite as good a storie as John Hofstetter but oh well. He has more experiance ..:)
