: Ex-mod purchase advice

I am considering retiring the RR and going series/Defender. I would most likely go with an ex-mod 109 IIa or III, as I like the versatility of the canvas top, i.e. being able to utilize the back as load space. Sudden rain is not too much of a consideration in Denver. Also, the thought of 4.7's and a Salisbury are appealing as well.

Can anyone give me some advice on the ex-mod scene? I have thought about importing something on my own, or using an importer here in the states such as "sky top rover". Pros? Cons? Advice? Who has done this before?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sky top is near me and I have been down there. Gabor is nice enough as are the trucks BUT you can do it cheaper yourself and all and all if you are using an importer I would use David Gage (thatchedroofgarage.com). The REALLY nice ex MOD trucks are not too much money and not terribly hard to find. Also enough Ex MODs comeup for private sale in the US. In fact I saw a SIII 109 SW exmod of 3500 on discoweb (still for sale I think).

Personally I like civy trucks but ex MODs are usually better trucks if you can get past the 13 layers of camo paint and cosmetic damage.

Importing is no sweat, just finding an OK truck in the UK without seeing it or paying someone to check it out is hard.

that's why we have all these people from the other side of the pond. I am sure that there are plenty of people on this board and in the community that would check out a truck for you if it was decently close enough to them and they'd probably do it just to get out and look at another land rover. I know I'd do it it there was one in dallas or fort worth that someone was looking at buying.

There are quite a few companies over here that supply ex military stuff.
just trying to think of some now (I'm in spain at the moment.... Ola!!!!.... and havn't got any LR magazines to hand (they're all in the bathroom!), but just hot a search engine and try military land rovers,

there are: LV Vass(www.lvvass.co.uk i think), Keith Gott (www.keithgott.co.uk) PA blanchard (www.pablanchard.co.uk i think) , agricultural and cross country vehicles (not too farm from me, but can't remember their www)

usually top price for a running series 3 109" military is ~about~ £1000 ukp. any more and you're being ripped off. some are advertised (from people like above) non running for as low as £300 UKP.
depends on if you want a turn key vehicle or you fancy spinning some spanners first.
in the UK, LHD rovers are usually cheaper too, so that could be usefull if you buy one here and import it.

jamie,
Thanks mate. I am especially interested in flying over, picking one out, shipping it my self, and driving it back to Denver, so a quality one is important. I don't mind the spanner spinning, I just don't want a rotten frame/bulkhead. Camo is no problem, as this will be a "work/trail" rig.

I will contact you off-list, and maybe you could help me out on the search. For a few pints of course.
