OK funny question but........

My rear axle started squeeking pretty bad on the way home today. Pulled over to check it and the center section was way hot like couldn't leave my hand on it. Hubs were OK one side was hotter than the other. Checked that side everything seemed ok.
I left it and picked it up hours latter. It started the noise after about a mile and 2 miles from home it felt pretty hot again.

I set this up myself so very well could be wrong. Axles feel good left to right play is like 1/2 inch maybe and inanout play is less than 1/4 inch on the side I checked. Full of oil(over full actually) but no leaks and no oil out the vents.

Am I just panicking or what???/

Dude, that's a hell of a lot of play...

Is the sound from the center section or from the outside end of the axleshafts?

Squeaking or howling?????? Are the ring and pinion setup correctly? Is it a semi floating axle? How are the bearings? This list could go on for quite awhile. Check the outer bearings then crack the center and look for frag. You have a problem that needs to be fixed or it is new rear end time.

It sounds like a crickit in the right side. I don't have much of a floor so I can hear a lot. Standard Dana 44 semi-floating. Hubs i mean really the axle shafts(hub) area. I'll pull everything tonight maybe that bearing went bad I did not change it.

Pretty much ruled out brakes already.

Just wanted to know if its getting to hot just paranoid I guess.

Extreme heat is not something to forget about, it is always a concern, the only time extreme heat if wanted is when it is 5'9" and has curves that don't stop. :D :D Then if you can't figure it out send it to me to diagnos and fix.

To much preload on the pinion:question: ..And its sounds like your wheel bearings have turned to dust:emb:

“endplay” on Semi float D44 rear???

My crick-crick-crick noise was from a roller turned sideways in the race chewing up a lot of metal shavings in the wheelbearing.

Problem with feeling the pig to see if it's hot - I've only done that when I expect soemthing might be wrong.. and guess what, every time I feel the diff after a long drive it *IS* hot.

Go figure..

Here's the results.

Wheel bearings good. Had oil on them.
R+P wear pattern pretty good.
Oil was burnt but not bad .

BUT I cold not turn it over by hand. Losen the pinion nut and yep spins great so I say to much preload although I did tork it to the 225 ft/lbs. DId not have an inch pound wrench but it was much eaiser to turn.

Bearing inside look fine no blued and no cracks. So I will reassmbly and try again. I am getin pretty fast at it.

Thanks for the help.

Ok, here's what's wrong: You have the wrong pinion shim thickness installed. When you have the correct shimpack thickness, 225 lb-ft torque on the pinion nut leaves about 15-20 in-lb (off the top of my head) to turn the pinion.

If you run it how it is, you'll likely have pinion bearing failure from too little preload on it now. You *should* take the yoke, seal, outer pinion bearing, etc back out and adjust the shimpack.

If you're not sure how to do this (get the correct thickness on the shim pack), write back and we'll hook you up.

Yep

I'll be a few days maybe Thursday-Friday area. 'K to the I call me Sarge' is in town Weds night and I don't see it getting done till after then.

I have shims some place, bearings were new maybe got 100 miles on them. Might get a in/lbs wrench to while I'm at it.
