View Full Version : Big issue? Or am I paranoid...

I installed the 501 part time kit in my Ford 203, and when I got it all bolted back together I realized something was bent, causing the rear output shaft to spin slightly off. When I say slightly, I mean SLIGHTLY. However, it was enough that I noticed... Is this a problem? I thought it was, so I haven't been driving it.. I just bought a good, low miles 203 to swap my 501 kit into, but it has a different differential and it looks pretty weak. What could possibly be bent? It seems like everything in there is really strong stuff, I have no idea what I could have bent...
I would greatly appreciate any help.

Im not so sure something is bent....maybe misaligned...any pics.... anyway it probaby is somewhat of an issue as it will wear out bearings seal etc...

Thats what I was thinking. I'm sure the bearings and seals would go rather quick. I can get a video of it tomorrow. I don't know what would be bent or miss aligned... any suggestions? All I can think of is that I messed something up when I was putting the rear output shaft back on, as I had to tap the end with a hammer to get it to slide on.

Shouldn't have had to do that. But unless you really beat on it, prolly not going to bend it. The output shaft is prolly bent.

The output shaft would slide on easily when the needle bearings were not inside of it, but when they were it didn't want to go on. I am positive I had them in there right, I looked it over about a million times. I finally got sick of stacking them in there, and grabbed a hammer and started tapping it. I didn't smack the shit out of it, but I did tap it kind of hard.. But if that was enough to bend the output shaft, that is ridiculous! However, that is what I am thinking as well... That, or the inner shaft that the output shaft slides onto.
Ill get a video in a few.

Sorry it took me so long to get the video...
Here it is:

Its really hard to tell, and I'm not sure you can from the video.. But when you are under it, and spin the shaft you can see a slight wobble between the shaft and rear seal. It is also noticeable at the inner diff.
EDIT: While uploading it turned out kind of dark.. Dang it. Also, please disregard the strange noise in the background, it is the heat pump to out house turning on.

Looks like something is definately wrong, id just pull it apart and see what you see, go from there. I know you would hate to pull it apart without knowing whats wrong, but its gonna have to come out again either way. Just my .02

Just a thought: Why don't you pull the yoke off and put a dial indicator on the shaft and see just how far out of whack it is? There's too many other things in the video that are distorting the true issue.

i say its moving too much... like Hack said, get a dial, and check how far its out... i think harbor frieght even has them...

I don't have a dial indicator, but I can go buy one. I hate taking it apart again, as I have many times already, wasting new oil and gaskets.. But I know it needs to be done, so I will do it again today. The problem is that when I pull it, everything looks fine, other then it not spinning straight. Maybe I will stick my new T-case rear output shaft on and see if it makes a difference, that way I know whether or not its the output shaft.
Thanks guys.

HMMMMMM!!!
Well, I took the weaker rear output shaft and diff from my new T-case, and put it on the case in my truck... Spins straight. SO, I guess its either the new MM gears, the diff, or rear output that is bent or not aligned correctly. I am swapping in the MM gears into the other diff housing, even though I really didn't want to use that housing...but we'll see if that makes a difference.
I get paid tomorrow, so I was planning on ordering the MM shaft kit for $300, since it eliminates that stuff.
Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it goes.

Uh...Go spend the $30 it's gonna cost ya to get one. I picked one up on sale at J&L Industrial Supply for about that. Make certain it has a magnetic base. If you're gonna do anything that has to do with bearings and setting end play, you are really going to need one. There was no way in hell that I could've rebuilt my Dana20 without it.

I tore it down, checked everything again, put it all back together and it seems to be a little less bent or miss-aligned. I don't think it is bent, I think the MM gears in the diff are just a little off. I ordered a MM shaft kit today, however I still want to find out what is wrong with this... I took a better vid of it today, while it was running.

Do you think its drivable? Or is it still too far off?
Thanks guys,

Well my shaft kit is on it's way so I guess it doesn't matter. I should have it by next Monday.Hopefully it eliminates the problems I am having.
My Ford might actually be drivable soon!

I think I will just wait until my shaft kit comes, its only a week at the most and that way it won't wear out seals and bearings. Besides, I found a good deal on a gixxer 750. :D

I took it for a spin today... It isn't insured, so I could only take it on our driveway, but we live about 1/2 mile up the mountain... It seems to be working nicely, although it makes a little more noise in the T-case then I was expecting. It's just a grind here and there when going from 4low,2low,2wd,etc. Just the ordinary sounds I presume?

I know videos distorts it but the second vid shows alot more straight spin than the first one does.

I thought it was spinning a lot better as well.
I guess I will run it that way, and see how it goes.
Thanks,
