A friend of mine is swapping in a 5spd into his 93 V6 Toyota Extra Cab 4wd. He bought one from a 89 I believe. I don't think this will work for his application as it does not have the VSS and electronic speedometer. It uses a cable. Are there any adapters to adapt a VSS to the older transfer cases or does he need to find a new tranny/transfer combo to swap in? If he does need to get a new tranny/transfer what years should he be looking at. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As long as it is out of a v6 truck, he should not have any problems. I did this swap a year ago and loved it. He will just need to get the correct digital speed sensor. I got mine from a auto wrecker for 45.00.

The speed sensor doesn't appear to be adaptable from his 93 auto transfer case to the 89 manual transfer case. The 89 was out of a V6 application. Is there a fix for this? Or do we need to find a different tranny or just a different transfer case?

Hold on, are you saying his 93 is a 4 cyl?

No he has a 93 V6 Xcab 4x4 that had an auto in it. He bought a 89 V6 5speed tranny and transfer to install in it. The transfer case is completely different as far as how the VSS comes out. The 89 doesn't have one it operates off of a cable. Where as his 93 doesn't have a cable and has an electronic speedo. I guess my question remains Does he need to buy a different tranny and transfer case or only the transfer case? Or can the transfer cases that take a cable be adapted for a VSS and electronic speedometer. Another possibility is that the tranny and transfer are not really from a 89 V6. How would we tell?

Its lke Etchboy says.

Just find the correct diameter sensor from a wreckers that will slot into the transfer. There are a variety of sizes available so you should be able to find one to suit. Supra's have them as well.

He does not need a separate VSS like the auto had as the necessary speed signal for the engine ecu will be obtained from the sensor on the speedo.

He doesn't need a new tranny. He just has to find a speed sensor from a 92 to 95 V6 truck or 4Runner. Check you auto wreckers. Also Marline sells an adapter to also make it work. The 4 cyclinders and the auto have the same diameter size. The V6 are larger, just need to find one from the date I listed above. I hope this helps.

Thanks that helps a lot. I'm way out of my league. I understand Land Cruiser stuff. It is much more simplified. What happened is I offered this Airman a spot in my garage to do the tranny swap. I figured I had space and I'd help him with the hard parts of it. Well it has been a month and a half now and nothing is back together. He completely dismantled his 3.0. I thought we were pulling the motor and tranny and transfer to put headers and a do the tranny swap. He is now trying to rebuild the 3.0. Heads are expensive for these things. So he is running into some questions with how far he should go. Needless to say, I'm learning a lot about the pre Tacoma minis. Thanks for your help!
