83 chevy pickup with 350 motor on propane, stock water pump, 160* t-stat, large 4-core rad, will see mild towing, daily driven truck. The fan shroud i have is mangled, thinking about just using the top half around the mechanical fan or even taking it out all together. Will the truck overheart? I've got ample gauges.
Thanks

I didnt have one on my toyota and it kept getting really hot. Picked one up at a junkyard, put it on and everything ran cool.
Id get one!

The shroud creates the vacuum innitiated by the fan. You need it in order to pull air through the radiator or you will heat up especially at stops.

shrouds do more good than harm. Replace it an be cool :smokin:

Without a shroud, the fan is basically useless, it can't pull the air through the radiator.
edit: too slow

i figured as much, got lazy there. The truck has a 3'' body lift, bumpers to fit and stuff. Not enough time to remove it, and fitting a fan shroud to fit is a pain in the ass. I'll head to a wreckers and find one. Thanks
edit- my old fan shroud fit, but it was zap strapped to the fan shroud. Local engine builder said it would chaffe the rad and eventually wear, that got some truth?

Guy who owned mine before me removed it. Lucky for me it was still around when I bought it. Will be going in shortly.

I have my lower fan shroud removed and I have NEVER had the engine overheat.

What are you running?
Having part of the shroud on will still create partial vacuum to draw air through the radiator. Not as efficient as a full shroud, but you'll get some movement through the radiator.

fans work without a shroud. my bro's sami has no shroud, and no heating problems (2.6 isuzu).

I also have no shroud and no overheating problems (304 V-8). I would put a shroud in if I stumble upon one as I know it will make the radiator cool more efficiently - but until overheating becomes a problem it's just not very high on the priority list.

4-bangers barely even need a radiator :shaking:
FYI: no, fans dont work without a shroud unless the blades are right up on the radiator fins. All they do is throw air around the engine compartment. The only significant draw you would get would be at speed, where air is being forced through the radiator.
Best to just run one. You guys not experiencing problems (yet) just jinxed yourselves by posting :flipoff2:
