: Downside to not using U bolts
evilfij 06-09-2002, 10:14 PM Is there a downside to not using U bolts and instead using something like allpro's perch kit (two plates and grade eight bolts)
Would four 1/2in bolts be enough or do I need to go to 9/16ths (shank diameter not head size). Is there a problem with just flat plate or should I bend the ends up?
My axles are square so U bolts won't fit right.
Ron
the all-pro style plates work great. i ran them and liked them better than u bolts.
Chrisjeep7 06-09-2002, 10:22 PM brake them and see how you like them....
they make square style U bolts, look on any tacoma rear end, the bolts go over the springs to a plate that contours to the axle
Chrisjeep7 06-09-2002, 10:40 PM what axle are you running? 2.5 tons?
if you are i would run what you said in the first post and weld it real nice...you wont nuke that setup.

How/why did it break? Please 'splain it to me
What size are the taco rear U bolts? How do you make a U bolt square? The volvos are really square. I would prefer not to weld the bolts to the axle if I can help it as they are going to be under the 88 only temporarily.

ouibus 06-09-2002, 11:14 PM I think that most machine shops and u-bolt manufacturers can bend you up a set of square u-bolts. Also, look under most full size trucks these days. They run square u-bolts on the rear end. The u-bolt fits over the spring then the plate fits over the axle. I imagine that they do that so it makes it easier to assemble the truck at the factory.
But you could just weld a plate onto the axle housing and have another on top that matches the bolt pattern like you suggested. I would just use 9/16's to 5/8's inch bolts since you are running the volvo portals. HTH
BadDog 06-09-2002, 11:19 PM Look at GM 1 ton trucks from the 80s. They have square u-bolts just like described and they are really heavy duty (if you can use them that is). Also, local spring place where got my u-bolts can make square any way you want it...
evilfij 06-09-2002, 11:59 PM Can anyone link/post a pic to one of these GM square U bolts? I am not seeing it in my head. Is it just a sqaured off bolt? wouldn't the corners be weak?
You think I need to go to 5/8ths? That is going to be a Biatch to drill 32 5/8ths in holes. 9/16ths seems more reasonable.
How about the plate? 3/8ths enough or would I need 1/2"
Just can't figure out what type of forces I am dealing with. Part of me just keeps thinking with portals its like having the lever action of a 16in taller tire trying to rip that plate off. Its "only" SUA so its not too terrible but still. Maybe I will just find out and copy what came stock on the Volvo.

AIRZUKI 06-10-2002, 01:16 AM found a couple pic's on the web........ search out U bolt flip kits...

like the tow truck looks sweet
Actually, for those that remember the thread with the Jeep being towed off by the Mog...The bolts on his homebrew perch didn't break, the shabby welds holding the perch to his axle did.

Which is exactly why I would not run the All Pro style perch kit. A standard U bolt flip kit offers just as much ground clearance, and far safer as well.
Any spring shop should be able to bend you up just about any custom U bolt you want - round, square, 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" even....
learn to weld. :flipoff2:
hell i am about to go in the garage and cut a pitman arm in half and shorten it 1" and weld it back together.

Learning to weld on something as critical as the sole contact point holding your rear axle in place is not something I would suggest ;) :p

SeaBass44 06-10-2002, 09:06 AM AOR has both round and square and can get you any size you want..........hope that helps.P.S. stock toyota p/u have square u bolts too, only about 6" in rear....fronts have a little longer one on the pumpkin side, maybe you can use those? I don't know what size you housing is....

I have a similiar set up on my CJ. It's still spring under, but the
u-bolts are flipped. They're square on the bottom. I got mine
from National Spring in El Cajon, Ca.
66CJdean 06-10-2002, 12:50 PM I run bolts not u-bolts and I run 9/16 grade 8 and I have broke one. So I say go with the 5/8 and for one other reason is that 5/8 is easyer to find than 9/16. http://www.respite.org/images/cj66dean/myjeeprear1.jpg

Then take it to someone you know is good @ welding, for instance, I am taking anything I need welded to my friend whom structural welds with x-ray testing. His welds on SS, aluminum, and regular steel are so good youd think it was a picture, and when he heliarcs (spelling) it looks like one piece of metal...
Most steel supply/fab shops carry all sizes of both square and rounded bolts...in any size you could want and they are not that much either....you can even get em cheaper at the dismantlers, just have to look and pull the ones you need...

With this design you might as well be spring under. Look at all the crap hanging down to get snagged on a rock. My 14 bolt had these along with the shock mounts hanging below the tubes. I used regular u-bolts to eliminate all of that bracket crap.

Well then - I guess for everyone else who does not have a multi-certified welder handy to do free custom work for them at whim, we can just use some freaking U bolts

I agree, that pic is what was under my K30 when I got it. Now it has u-bolts with a plate on top. I got the bolts and plate off of a 3/4 ton C20. I also relocated the shock brackets up out of the way.
