How can I visually check a Dana 44 carrier to see if its a low gear carrier or not. What are the physical difference between the low and high brake carriers?

thanks,

The lower the gear ratio, the thicker the ring gear is gonna be (to make up for the smaller diameter of the pinion) Im gonna go ahead and guess that on a low gear carrier the ring gear flange is either thinner or offset more away from the centerline of the carrier. Maybe a little of both.

Just a guess, ive never compared the two.

Like Ramstein guessed, the ring gear mounting flange is shifted between the two carriers. The difference between them is less than 1/2", so it's tough to tell which type one is unless you've got both types side by side.

The 3.92-and-deeper carrier has the mounting flange set closer to the centre of the carrier, to move the ring gear closer to the pinion.

it appers that the flange is a little off-set but that is for the power lock might be difrent for an open diff

Many powerlocks cases are marked "std" for low gear 3.92- and "auto" for -3.73. See ring gear bolt side of case.

see ya.
