I know this is a gay newbie question, but I'm a Toyota guy, don't know a WHOLE lot about Jeeps. I'm thinking about buying a scrambler, but don't know what years had what, etc. Can anyone fill me in a little here or give me some good stuff to search for? I already searched scrambler and read all that. What axles are available? Thanks in advance:usa:
axles are dana 30 front, m20 rear

What Brad said. The stock axles are weak, as are most stock axles on anything but one tons.

I am hearing that some 82 had wide track axles, and everything below had narrow track. Besides that its like another jeep, make sure it relatively rust free and straight. Most people seek out 84 or 85 because of its rarity. If you can score an 86 then that would be nice..(86 are all the left over 85's that were sold in 86) Also the newer ones had a surpentine belt. Hope that helps..:)

Go to www.CJ7HEAVEN.com or call at 408-472-0459 and they can tell you all you need to know about Scrambers and CJ's in general. They specialize in selling CJ's. I believe they have several Scramblers in stock.

Ive had to do a little searching on scramblers because I own one. they produced roughly 27,000 of these rigs. They ran from 81-86.
The 81 have a narrow track axle like the cj 5. The rest came with wide track cj width axles. There are a few 86 year models that came with the rear dana 44. Most cj 8 came with the dana 300 transfer case. The 4 cylinder was the standard and the 258 6 cylinder was a common dealer upgrade. I belive the wheel base is 103 or 104 inches (I streched mine to 105 so I cant rember exactly.) As far as body parts you can use most any cj parts except for the tub itself. I hope some of this helps. I would say get the jeep they kick some serious but especially if you bob the rear end to get rid of the overhang problem.....
good luck:beer:
