Guys, I have a buddy with a FJ40 with a 2F straight 6.
Here's the problem. Every on occassion, the motor will die while driving. Then if/when you start it, you can't throttle it at all or it will die. No other real symptoms. It happens speratically (sp?). It happened several months ago, then he rebuilt the carb. It has since been gone (he's put over 1000 miles on it since). Then the other day, it happened again. He thought the floats got stuck on the carb, so took the top off and put it back on and it was fine. Then it happened again.
He checked his fuel filter and there was a bunch of shit in there (grass and all kinds of crap). So he replaced it. We're also going to drain the tank and check the lines.
Any other suggestions?

Your all over it.
Check the pickup when you have the tank off. I would unhook the fuel line at the pump and the tank and blow air through it.

Hey Sceep, you're a dumbass. The problems that we're having aren't Toyota specific. But way to pad your post count... :flipoff2:
Anyway, that's a good idea on blowing the air through the fuel line. We might just run all new line (fuel line is cheap!). You're thinking the filter that is around the pickup might be clogged? We'll check it out.
Thanks guys.

damn..... you didnt catch the hint of sarcasim there? fawk man...
and how do you know that they arent toyota specific, or fj specific? maybee that year of fj has known problems with a unsheilded fuel line running to close to an exhaust component?
Now granted, the grass in your fuel filter will probably yeild to other problems in the line or tank but maybee it is a vapor lock problem.
Lighten up man. :flipoff2:

Sorry man. There's always the guys that pipe in with no information, just trying to be shits. I'm still waiting for the post saying "the problem he is having is that motor. Put a 350 in it", etc. We're goig to the con this weekend, and I don't have time for that shit.

Were is the filter? If it's in-between the pump and carb and you getting crud in it I bet the crud is sticking one of the check valves in the fuel pump open. Open valve = no worky:p

We used to run a lot of mud and water. First you pull the tank and make sure it's clean. While it's out remove the intank filter. We've had crap collect in there that would get sucked up around the sock and would not gas pass.(no pun intended) Check all fuel lines including your vent. If your vent gets plugged your pump can't overcome the vac. in the tank. This was usually a problem in cool weather as in warm the expansion of gas will pressurize the tank instead. I've always ran two inline fuel filters that were placed somewhere easy to access one before the pump and the other after and an electric boost pump at the tank. With these things done your all but assured of having fuel to the carb at any time. Whether or not it's combustable fuel or not is another subject.
Good luck

The filter is before the pump, and we changed it out. Then we took it around the block and didn't make it. Same thing.
Check this out. We took the line off of the carb and cranked it over. It seemed to spurt fuel out well. We took the top of the carb off and the float seemed okay. The bowl is basically running on empty. It would fill up if you idled enough but when you give it some throttle, the bowl empties out and stays that way. It still ran, under no load, but the bowl never caught up. Is this how it should work?
BTW, he has 2 tanks and it seems to do it with both tanks. So I don't think it's the pickup.
Thanks for the info guys and keep it up!!!!

I had a problem with lean backfiring with my '40 on the highway...It turned out that the diaphram on the pump was bad. From the way you described the fuel in the carb, I would say that is probably what your problem is.
Be careful, too, I got a new pump from Schuck's, and it was the new pump giving me the problems. I would say to crack open the pump and make sure it's all good.

He has a newer pump as well. The funny thing is he just made a 300 mile trip no problem over memorial (didn't run great, but not this problem). Seems like when the fuel pump goes, it goes...
