: Torching off Spring Perches on 14 bolt, TOO HOT?
POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 08:40 PM I'm trying to torch off the old leaf sripng perches, dang those are thick. Will it get to hot and cause problems if I 'm torching for say 20 mins?
Any other waysto get them off?
Thanks alot

FordPowr.. 10-16-2001, 08:45 PM all you should have to do is cut he welds...should only take a minute or two
i used the grinder to get mine off, just have to get around the bottom of the perch
POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 08:49 PM With the torch, or like a grinding wheel or something?
If I use the torch, do I have to worry about going through the tube, or just get it nice and hot and give it a good whack with the BMFH.
Thanks

POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 08:53 PM Posted the exact same time. I guess I'll try the grinder then and see how that works.
Thanks alot for your help.

Shawn 10-16-2001, 08:56 PM Tourch them off, then use a grinder to clean it up.
POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 08:59 PM Torch just the welds and whack, or the whole deal?
The one side i started on is just a 1/2" gob of nasty metal so that one will suck, for the second I want to do it right.
Also do i have to worry about getting to hot?
Thanks
Shawn 10-16-2001, 09:06 PM Just tourch as much as you can, if I remember right there is a bottom on the perch. Yep a big gob of slag. I cut on mine for about 10-15 min to try and clean it up.
The tub is very thick, just keep the flame of the tube as much as you can.
71RCKCRZR RYAN 10-16-2001, 09:12 PM PLASMA CUTTER
POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 09:23 PM My teacher is letting me buildthe whole truck in shop, and I have acsess to a PLASMA CUTTER but the frigging compressor is down so it's the torch for now.
Thanks
ironpig70 10-16-2001, 09:24 PM i just did mine used a torch, grinder and hammer. if you hurt them just buy a new set. $20 for a pair from summit. <IMG SRC="smilies/fj.gif" border="0">
POS w/Potential 10-16-2001, 09:28 PM I've definitly hurt them, but I already built a new set and welded them on, just got to get the old ones off now.
Old Scout 10-16-2001, 09:30 PM Keep the axles in!
71RCKCRZR RYAN 10-16-2001, 09:39 PM THAT SUCKS.NO PLASMA...
I WAS LOST WITH OUT MINE
MattS 10-17-2001, 07:48 AM If you have the cutting tip in and have the gas set correctly the axle will not get overly hot. Make sure to have enough pressure and have the "blast" button set correctly. Test it on some scrap. After getting the main puddle hot you should be able to move about an 1/8 inch a second. I point the flame toward where I am cutting at a 45 degree angle away from whatever it is attached to if possible, lay on the blast button and go go go. if you get a spot where the cut drips together keep going. You can hit it with a hammer later and it will easily crack. HTH
lake_55 10-17-2001, 08:58 AM what about if he was trying to save the perches how could he cut them off?

If you were trying to save the perch, I would go with a grinder. I used a grinder to grind off the welds, then used a thinner 4 1/2" disk (like a cut-off wheel) on my grinder to cut under the perch. You'll noticed that the weld goes into the perch some. Then the BFH to pound it off. I reused mine.

Look on the coloradok5.com in the buildup section....they show a 14 bolt getting new mounts <homebuilt from a 3x3 tube i think>

scizout 10-17-2001, 12:04 PM Use a die grinder with a cut off wheel. An air hammer helps a bunch too. Don't get that torch too hot.
FordPowr.. 10-17-2001, 03:10 PM It's not that hard to just blow off the weld with a torch....the perch and the weld are different types of metal
It should only take a couple of minute to blow out the four welds then take a hammer to em' to knock them off.
Don't worry about the heat, you have to sit there a long time to heat up the tubes enough to hurt them
scott-885 10-17-2001, 03:45 PM I torched mine off because to hell with grinding takes too long. I just made sure not to burn threw the tubes and grind what is left I took multiple brakes so not to get them too hot.
o hot.
badassjeepguy 10-17-2001, 03:47 PM yeahh an air chissel after some grinding will pop that fawker off...
POS w/Potential 10-17-2001, 05:26 PM Got them off today with the torch and a crow bar and a much bigger BMFH. I almost had a hernia but they finally peeled off.
Thanks for all the responses I appreciate it

Cliffy [JD] 10-18-2001, 07:09 AM I am under the impression that the 14bolt spring perches are CAST into the axletube...I had to do some pretty fancy torching to get mine off and they seemed to be attached to the axle every step of the way.
Maybe I'm wrong
