This is killing me. I went to buy a "Dana 44" shaft out of a "Chevy" the other day. The thing had 31 splines. It takes a Spicer steering joint, looked like the 297 (I was only looking at the inner shaft). It also had a machined groove where the axle seal would ride....So what is it?

Go count again or post a really good pic of the end so we count them.

Lot's of spicer shafts are 31 spline, just not the one out of a chevy. Can't them 30 splines again.

I counted it 5 times.

I also compared to a broken off Dana 44 spline I had and it was ever so slightly bigger.

I don't think it is a custom shaft...looked like old factory shit.

MJ: looks like I got two fingers buddy! :flipoff2:

Which ones are 31 spline??? That was my question!

Ley me spell it out for you guys...the shaft was supposedly (hence the "" marks) out of a Dana 44 for a Chevy. It did in fact have 31 splines. I can fawking count.

I'm not going to buy it, I already know it won't fit my shit. I just wondered if anybody knew what it was out of, as in, axle model and vehicle

calm down !

Ok, I looked in my Spicer XGI book and there are at least 50 BM#'s with 31 spline. Most are late model Dodge and Export applications. Didn't see 1 chevy except for a export Isuzu 1 ton. I can't remember but I think GM ownes them now. All of these will have a 5-297x or 5-760 u joint and all should have a spline stub shaft with a nut, like a late model dodge 'course.

No straight axle chevys.

hope this helps.

see ya,

You no this board would be any fun if everyone didn't get a little sh!t....

Well gang, I finally found the answer: it's a LONG SIDE shaft out of a Ford Dana 44 TTB. The long side has 3 pieces with a slip joint between the inner two. The big groove is for the pinch clamp on the rubber boot.

You confused a long side TTB axle with a long side straight axle shaft??.
The TTB shaft has a slip yoke AND an extra U-joint in the middle of the shaft. The long side TTB also has a C-clip on the Diff. side.

They look surprisingly similar when removed from the truck.

And actually, the extra u joint is on the other side if I'm not mistaken.

Niether side has 3 u-joints newbie:rolleyes:

I was mistaken however, the extra u joint is on the long side. Oops

Now, if you have ever actually seen the middle section of the long side removed from the ruck it is surprisingly easy to mistake it for a short shaft, though I knew it was not for my application
