I'm looking at these axles as starters... they have 5.38s which would really help. I've read that the D27 is only a 10-spline axle shaft, but if I don't lock it I should be okay, right? Right? :homer:

Also, the D44 I've read to be a 19-spline axle... is it possible to swap the carrier to run aftermarket 30-spline one-piece shafts? I can get these axles for free, so I'm interested to tinker with them.

The D27 would ultimately be swapped for a narrow trac D30 ASAP... like I said, these would be starters. Does anyone have any information on this?

I tried a search which provided the limited information I have so far, but I couldn't find anything about upgrading the D44.

check earlycj5.com for lots of info on these.

The rear tapered 19-spline axles can only be converted to 30 spline if you make it full floater and replace carrier. (check the site listed for details) You are better off with later one-piece axles for strength.

The Dana27 CAN take some abuse, but the Dana30 is a bit more rugged. Will they last ? Some have survived behind small block chevies, but only with reasonable driving and 33" tires. If you drive like most on this board, expect to break them.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know much about the strength of the 19-spline? Do you think it'd be any good for 34s unlocked in a Samurai?
