: Towing your rig on a UHual Trailer

Hello All..

Just a quick question for those of you that have towed your rigs in a Uhaul full car trailer..

What did you do to secure the rig down? I have heard UHaul gives you some small ass tire straps that go over the tire. Well I'm pretty sure they won't fit over a 35". Did you guys just air down?, switch to some smaller tires? or just secure the rig via the axle??

I'll be towing my rig from Cali up to Alberta behind a 24' Uhaul..

Rig is a '93 Toy X-cab V6, 35" tires and 5+" wider then stock.

Thank All

Thank All dont tell them what you are putting on there, they have limits, say its a honda or something, and no their straps wont work for you. youll have to buy some ratchet tie downs and a chain to secure it, hope it fits length wise, u dont really have a choice for tounge weight, u load it and go! jiMMy

When my cousin gave my Dad his '66 Dodge 3/4 ton we towed it from Bend, Oregon to Vancouver, B.C. on a U-Haul trailer. The straps were too small for the 235/85R16(approx 32") tires so we aired them down until the straps fit. Never had any problems at all.

Say you have a stock cj5 or something, thats always worked for me in the past. The straps wont go over the wheels, but they'll go over the axle tubes ;)

I don't think a 24" will be able to tow it no matter what size tires.:flipoff2:

I had told UHaul when I first spoke to them what exactly I was going to pull and they never said a thing.. Accidently didn't mention to them that truck is not quite 'stock'..

So as long as it will fit width and length wise I can just buy my own rachet straps and chains and secure it down, right??

yeah, if I remember right you can tie it down with your own stuff.:D

I towed my CJ5 when it had 35" tires on one. I switched to the old stock tires and wheels in the front to get the straps to pull over them. It wasn't a very big deal.

I did it this way from Dallas to Vergina (SP?) actually worked well...but if you can borrow some ratchet staps from someone, they'll give ya 'piece o' mind'.
BTW don't tell 'em what yer haulin' (just say a neon or something) I told them and then they wouldn't rent me one. But around here there's a U-Haul around every corner so I just went to another oneand said 'neon' when they asked what I was going to haul...

i tow my zuk on one occasionally, ive only got 31's but still have to air down to about 5 psi to fit the straps, far as i know, you can use additonal tiedowns though.

What's the towing capacity on the FJ80?

Ran into a hassle with Uhaul when I used a '95 Areostar (4.0 engine, with a tow package) that they would NOT rent me a trailer as the tow vehicle "was too small". I explained I was picking up a small Datsun (1800#), so would be fine on the gross limits.

Had the Dude look up the towing limits in the book, but he couldn't find it... I finally got the OK from the manager, but was a hassle in picking it up (should have been a 5 minute deal, as the paper work was done in advance, and prepaid.... not an hour of time wasting).

Oh, when I came back the little sucker wouldn't give me the time of day either... dropped the trailer on the far side of the parking lot and let him deal with it. :D He didn't want to go out in the rain, but when he realized I was dropping it THERE he started yelling from the doorway... I just waved back and said "OK!". I hate those places.

As you already know... watch those brake lines when you strap down the axles.

I put my 85 on a U-Haul trailer, lowered the front tire pressure on the 33-9.50's to 5 psi to get the straps to work. I also used 2 additional heavy duty rachet straps.

You asking me???? I have no Idea.. Don't have an FJ80.. Just the front axle of an FJ80 on my Toy. I will be towing it all behind a 24' Uhaul truck...

Thanks for all the info people. Been muchly appreciated!!!

From the UHaul Webpage:

Advisements the Vehicle in Tow:

Must not weigh in excess of 4,000 lbs.
Must have a maximum “outside to outside” tire width of 79 1/4 inches
Note: outside tire width over 75 in. must use late-model U-Haul auto-transport (identifiable by silver galvanized color).
Must have a maximum wheelbase (distance from front axle to rear axle, usually posted on the driver’s side door jamb) of 133 inches.

When I got one (on the east coast) it didn't have wheel straps. It had ratcheting chain tie downs.

Oops... sorry, I just looked at the pic, mine was a Ryder.:goofball:
