: 84 Single Cab carbed or 86 4runner EFI
tALL bASTARD 06-11-2002, 01:26 AM Which would you choose and why? Trying to decide, my fun depends on it.
86 4runner
DOA EFI cam, lockright rear, IFS lift, 31 BFG MT, full stereo system installed, 120k miles, SR5 without power windows and tiltometer
84 Single Cab
carbed, some combination of body and susp lift, 33 BFG MTs, 142 or 242k miles, basic model
I own the 86 now and its a good 4runner.
The 84 looks clean on the outside and couldnt find any leaks underneath. Dunno about axle ratio/lockers/engine condition cause I just found it half an hour ago (1 am), and havent gotten a full tour. Also couldnt see if it was a 1 or 2 for the first number in the mileage.
Just wondering what the consensus is on this? EFIs ability in climbing and power, or the SA. I had an 85 with EFI and stupidly sold it before I found this board, liked it, ride was a little harsh but I dont mind. I wont have the money for a full on SAS for at least 5 years, but I would like to do some harder wheeling. Although, I do like the 4runner for its room and low mileage.
Got a line on this truck, for sale sign said 2450, but I think I could do better. This truck will be need to be some form of DD too.
Thanks for your opinions and possible flames.:flipoff2:
I'd take the 'runner and do a SAS on it!!
Dick Hertzer 06-11-2002, 10:05 AM I vote for the Runner.
Start collecting parts for the SAS.
Wheel it until then.
Jim Johnson 06-11-2002, 11:49 AM if the price tag on the 84 is 2495.00, surely you can do an SAS cheaper than that. Plus you know your runner and you will have EFI and the Hauling room as well.

i feel the same way, do a sas on the runner. I had a 85 toy with EFI, now i am getting an IFS 4runner and doing a sas on it
Bill Collins 06-11-2002, 09:37 PM hell,if you were closer,i would trade you a 2nd owner 84xcab for your runner:D
v6toy4x 06-12-2002, 05:55 PM 4-runner-- hands down
4running 06-13-2002, 07:06 PM Go for the runner!
can I ask why no one on this board likes IFS? Ill keep my SR5 IFS for now cause I do very little wheeling but drive it ALOT!
At the risk of being flamed......................
I'll keep my Auto hubs too! They work perfectly, and in the winter I don't have to get out to change them!I know people have complained of them coming unlocked but I have been VERY stucks and gotten out everytime I have yet to have them come unlocked. EVER! :roxy:
MY AUTO HUBS RULE!! :p

actaully-
Its not cause I am a "Newbie" its because I dont 4wheel the way most do on this board. I drive my truck in the deep snow up here and for my puposes the smooth ride of the IFS out weighs the 4wheeling ability of an SAS. I am not a hard core 4wheeler the way you guys are. Although, once I get my lift on, I could get bitten by the bug! you never know...... :smokin: Just some FYI
I went to my first Toyota club meeting last week ( MN toyx4's)drove my truck and had a blast!( thats how I found out about this site) And I plan on using the club outings, trail rides and meetings as a way to enjoy my truck and help others out as well. Maybe I will cough up my auto hubs and IFS once I start wheeling...... you never know!
regards,
Kyle
tALL bASTARD 06-13-2002, 10:08 PM Heres a thought for ya. Have you ever tried to BACK out of whatever it is your wheeling on, whether because you got stuck, high centered or had to back down a hill?
If so then your hubs HAVE come unlocked. May not have been an issue then, but I have had it be a major issue. Especially when backing down a LONG steep hill of loose slate. You need the tractive friction of all four wheels under power to keep you from sliding to the bottom.
Ask me how I know.
I loved the fact of not having to get out, but the above problems and the fact that I blew the clutch in one. (With no lift, 31s and not the kind of wheeling most people do here (read easy wheeling), mind you).
Thats when I switched over to manual. Not giving you a flame, just my experience. If you never wheel then its not a prob.
IFS rides better than SA, thats true for the most part, but when you crawl the IFS does nothing. Just facts of life. Still got my lovely IFS though, I even lifted it :flipoff2:
4running 06-14-2002, 07:26 AM Thats exactly what I needed to hear. I think I must have to back up pretty far to get mine to unlock. But thats not the point, Now I see the advantages of lockouts which I didnt see before. I just thought you guys though it was cool to have the little dial on your wheels, Kinda like clear tailights on a Honda Civic j/k
Ok thanks guys!
