We are planning a work day on the Rubicon for June 29th. The goal is to repair 3 mud pits that are located just before Walker Hill and just after Walkers Rock. Please see the following thread for the discussion
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58829
It is not our intention to completely fill the pits. Our goal is to simply make them passable and to block off the bypass trails that have been started. We will use rock and soil from the surrounding areas to help mitigate further errossion.
We need as many volunteers as we can get! The more workers we have the more we will accomplish.
Let the sign up and ideas begin!
TIA for your support!

I can bring shovels, choker cable, snatchblock, gloves, chainsaws, what else?
I guess we will need to leave around 7:00am. Unless there are a lot of people then we may need to leave earlier. How long does it normally take you? I drive slow but I can make Spider in 90min.

I say we leave the spillway at 7am. That should give us plenty of time to deal with traffic (if neccessary) and to get to the first obsitcal (downed trees after Ellis creek)

Mike- if you want to bring some rock in with you, drop it in the first pit. It's the one just after a small creek (not Ellis) and you have to turn left as you exit the creek. Just place the rock up toward the wall and the exit of the pit. There's not a lot of rock in that area and there's a lot up at Walker.
Thanks to you and your group for the help!

Haven't been up this year so I'm not positive but pretty sure of where your talking about. Hopefully it will be obvious and maybe even others will have started to stack em . We are not going in as a group so the more familar Walker would have been easier to organize but we'll see what we can do.
BTW this is not an organized run but just people hooking up. There must be some organized club runs between now ond the end of the month that could really help to haul in more rock.

With all the help here are all the spots that I know of: Drain the small lake just after Ellis ck., then remove all the downed trees from the streem just up the trail, remove the one large log from the next streem, then at that streem there is a mud pit that needs help, the next mud pit is just below Walker rock, and the last one and it is the biggest is a ways above Walker rock. I don't know what the game plan is as to what we are going to work on but there is a list of what needs work.

I have some broken up concrete that I can bring up. It's not a lot, but it will help keep from having to steal rocks from the trail. Let me know.

The mud holes are in places where there are plenty of rocks so no need for the rip-rap. I think with the help that is comming it should take long at all. Can we decide on a CB channel?

I haven't made it up there yet this year. Do the pits still have water in them?
If so has anyone got a 1"1/2"-2" water pump with hoses that could be used to drian off some of the water. This would make repairs alot better if we can see the bottom and make placing of the rocks and fill more useful instead of making a big slop hole. if the pit has water in it and you just pile in dirt and rock you will be back next year to the same pit. we need to set a good base of rock to make it last

I was up there on Memorial Day. There was a little water and a lot of mud. My guess is that by now, it's just mud.

IceMan (FOTR) & I went up today to scout things out. There are actually four areas that need work. Two are bigger, and two are smaller. There is water in all of them.
The area past Walker Hill is not a water/mud issue any more. We need to do something longer term, but not on the 29th.
Our take on the work is that this can't be accomplished in one day. The first thing that needs to be done is drain the areas and provide a clear exit for the water so that it cannot accumulate. Then once the water is gone (or greatly diminished), the areas need to be properly rocked.
My suggestion would be to attack the drainage on the 29th, and placing rock on another weekend once things have dried out. If we bite off more than we can chew, the work will not be done properly, and we'll have to do it over again. Let's do it right. That said, I can't make it on the 29th. :(
There is no harm in hauling in some rock and collecting some from the surrounding areas (wheelbarrow would be good).
I would also suggest mosquito repellant and rubber boots (at least as an option).
I will have pictures of the areas that I can send to a few of you as needed. I will not post them here.
Water pump(s) might not be a bad idea.
That's my 2 cents.
IceMan does this stuff for a living, so he will have better direction than me. His rig is out of commision:(, so he'll be looking for a ride in on the 29th. He might also need a hand getting his rig out tomorrow if someone has free time. His steering box busted out of his frame. Through the tough stuff, just another 100ft to go.

I was up there this weekend and think with some picks and shovels we could do quite abit. I would think that we will need to plan another weekend a month or two latter just to do any repaires that might be needed and asses how it is holding up. The streambed log jams are all taken care of now and the water is not a problem at the mud pits before Walker but I didn't make it up top.

Thanks for the weekennd updates! I agree that we will need to plan another work day but it's important that we keep the main objective in mind. That is to keep the trail passable and to block the bypasses. Is the mud pit at the bottom of Walker Hill passable? Are the bypasses still being used?
The drainage issue is going to be a long term project and IceMan can guide us on how to deal with it. Any plans we have to make permanent drainage repairs will need to be cleared with El Dorado county and the USFS.
Thanks again for the updates! Keep them coming :)

Mark,
There aren't any mud pits at the bottom or top of Walker. They are all dry. Bypasses weren't being used as far as I could tell.
I think we should focus on the areas that still have standing water. Clear the debris on the downside and get them draining properly. Then work on rocking them to mitigate silt runoff.

Cool! As long as people can get through then I agree, let's attack the standing water and block the bypasses :)

We camped at the bottom of Walker we did watch quite a few rigs go through there and to my supprise quite a few of them were having some difficulty with this spot. It isn't that there is much callenge to this spot as much as it is that people don't know how to drive. The bypass is nothing new and therefor not really hurting much but it is causing more erosion so it needs to be closed off so that there is only one way in for camping. As stated though the ground in this spot is dry for the most part.

Did you get any pictures of the trouble spots?
This may help us prepare.
