Is anyone here running a 501 in any of their rigs? I have a friend thats putting one in a late 60's SWB Chebby 4x4 and was wanting to run a TH350 behind it (he already has one and is trying to be frugal).....

I was going to look up an adapter for him at AA's web site, but figured I'd ask a question here first....Even if they have an adapter, will a 350 hold up to a Caddy 501 engine?

My thoughts are that he would be better suited going with a 400, plus it might cost him less.....what tranny did Caddy run in their cars? I would think it was a 400, so if thats the case he would actually save money since he wouldn't have to buy the adapter...

Which autos hook up to a caddy 501?

thanks,

The caddy you are talking aout is a 500 not a 501. I am running
this motor in my jeep and love it. The factory tranny behind these
morors are th400's so go that route.

You can use a Buick-Olds-Pontiac adapter, the Caddie had the same bolt pattern.

Definetly a TH400, in fact, you may even want to look into the heavy duty towing version with straight-cut gears (TH475?)

and you can buy a BOP adapter ring from Trans-Dapt for less than half of what A-A wants to charge you

The "501" code on the Caddy actually refers to the 472ci Caddy engine. The big Caddy engine is a true 500ci beast. You can't tell the two apart without popping the oilpan or sparkplug to actually measure the stroke. The bore is the same.

Ditch the TH350. Don't even bother. Get the Caddy TH400 (or any BOP TH400) and have the output shaft changed to a Chevy 4wd output shaft to work with your T-case. You can get BOP<->Chevy adaptors, but why when the transmission housing that you want is already available?
