What can be done to strengthen the non-IFS style rear axles. By plan is to run 31 to 32 tires, add a top brace (aka old Downey style). What else can be done?
I hear your first responce- why not use the 86+ IFS style axle? This is on a project desert race truck - class regs state the stock axles must be used. And while POR is for rocks - still there must be some good "tech" on how to beef up these axles.

there isn't anything really wrong with the rear axel on toys!
about the best thing you can do is add a v6 third member out of a newer axle.
i have welded my third and beat the crap out of it. i have an 85 toyota pickup. i am currently running 32" tires.
i have jumped my truck rock crawled and gone mudding is some seriouly thick boogery crap. i haven't had any problems with them yet. they are strong axles.

what is the point of a top brace??? if you do anything to your axle (hitting it up or down) the suspension would absorb it, thats what it's there for. and if you hit your axle so hard in a place where you'd risk bending the axle when the suspension bottoms out, would a little downey brace save you?
IMO invest your money elsewhere on the truck
Actually, I would check into the regulations as to what is "stock" because if you stuck the wider rear axle underneath, and a set of diff back-spaced wheels up front, whom would know the difference that it was not a stock axle???

Just be careful welding bigtime on the housing - there's a fella on this board that warped his housing doing that. I know, cuz he bought a new housing from me:D :D :D :D
What (other than width) is the advantage of the newer axles? My brakes are a little smaller but I have never had a problem with them. Also isn't there LESS leverage on everything since it's not as long?

axle tube is bigger and stronger, brakes are bigger...if you don't need the width then use a 79-85 I do, but I have a sammy body so it's allready wide enough:flipoff2:
