: Possible move to SF area

I've been offered an incredible job in the SF area, across from Giant's Stadium. I'm looking into housing in nearby suburbs (Sunset, San Mateo, etc..) and it's not looking promising. Is it possible to live in that area and have a fullsize truck to tow with, a trailer and my rock crawler or is this a pipe dream? Ideally I'd like to park my crawler in the garage, my trailer nearby (storage is fine) and my tow rig on the street. Can anyone recommend area's to look that have a 45 minute or less commute? Thanks!

the commute in the bay area sucks, and the housing is overpriced, you should figure on averaging 30mph on the freeway during the commute hours, if you plan on crossing one of the bridges its a $4 for all of them except for the golden gate that is $5 to cross,

one more thing storage lots in that area for your trailer are $75 to $100 per month

Well, my commute can be either public transit or on my motorcycle. I don't want to move over a bridge, either.

I wouldn't mind doing storage outside of SF, somewhere cheap. I'm more concerned about finding a house I can live in with all my crap. :)

What kind of price range are you looking for? You can find stuff in the San Mateo County in the mountains something like La Honda, Half Moon Bay, San Grigorio (sp?). Is it just you or do you have a family?

Well if you are getting Barry Bonds money you can find something in SF. If you are like the rest of us IMO the old part of Concord has big lots, close to BART, and there are a number of off-roaders out there.

Good luck in your search.

X2 AND in they aren't going to bother you as much in Concord with ordinance BS like they will everywhere else in the bay. Or at least everywhere else that you would want to live in the bay.

Nah, no family moving with me. I have a sister in half moon bay, so i'd like to steer clear of that area. :D How bad is the commute over the bay bridge? I wouldn't be heading home from work before 7pm and like I said, I have the motorcycle.

I'm looking around $2k a month to rent, before having a roommate. I don't plan on staying @ this job for more than a couple of years so I don't want to buy a place.

I'll be watching the traffic on 511 the next couple of days and see which commutes I can tolerate. Thanks for all your help! I'll check out Concord.

also if you are going to be working in sf close to a bart station check out bart.gov and find a place to live to a bart station and take bart to work

Concords not a bad place to live if you are a wheeler. Not many places to live that are wheeler friendly and without crossing a bridge.

I am a Realtor in the East Bay, if you like you can give me a call and discuss what you are looking for. I can help you out to find a rental as well as find a house to buy when you are ready to stay:D

south san francisco is about 10 minutes away, you can easily find a place for around 2k a month, might take you a while to find one with rv parking (for trailer) but they are out there.. only thing is the weather sucks in ssf.

what would your hours be?

I'm coming from Seattle, I bet the weather is an improvement. :D

My hours would be, roughly, 10am to 10pm.

personally, i dont like concord, unless you go out towards clayton whihc adds to the commute.

pleasant hill is noce, some parts of martinez are OK. Bart would be a good deal for the commute to King and that area if thats where you are going to work.

check out dublin/pleasonton area. Bart runs right there too.

Darren, I grew up in SF. The sunset is not a suburb, but a part of the city. You can't park a trailer in SF unless you got storage (plenty in SSF area). The rig will fit in a garage, and if you are in the sunset, you can park your tow rig on the street. I used to park my cummins in front of my house on 16th ave. If you need advice on where are the good parts of the city, let me know.

One other thing to remember about SF is that there is RENT CONTROL... You get in at a good rate, it stays there. You can get a house in the sunset for about $2000. gEt a roommate and you are golden. Let me know when you move, and we canhook up. I still work in the city and commute in every day.

X5 on Concord..
Especially with Bart.. It's a 35-40 minute ride to Embarcadero..
Good for a book or two a month.

If your set on your bike, the Island of Alameda is good option, but it's close to Oakland which has lots of crime...

IIRC the Bay Bridge (and all the other I think) are free for bikes during commute hours. 6-9am, 3-6pm (or there abouts).

Man-up and move to Discovery Bay.

If you like drinking, boating, wakeboarding, golf, fishing, having neighbors that will actually TALK to you, small lines at Safeway, and hot chicks in skimpy bikinis, it's the place to live.

With those hours traffic will be bad but not horrible. Plus, a nice long commute will put hair on your chest. :D

Seriously though, I would NEVER live anywhere in the Bay Area again. (I lived there for 10 years) If I had to work on the penisula, I would rather live over the hill in the tri-valley. Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, Concord etc...(Yes, I know it's still considered the Bay Area) I think the commute would be well worth it. But even then, those areas are getting really crowded.

Disco Bay is nice (for the reasons you mentioned) but far.

Not Horrible?

He wants a 30min commute.. That would make 90 minute commute.

If your set on the bike, look where you like.
If you want do the public transit, look along the bart line.

What kind of weather are you looking for?
If you will get homesick for Seattle, look on the Penisula... They get lots more cool weather & fog.

If you want more sun, yet some fog, but good commute, look at Alameda, Piedmont or San Leandro.

If you want Hot during July/August, go East Bay (Pleasanton, Concord, to Disco Bay)

Man-up to hot chicks in bikinis? Best advice I've heard in years. :grinpimp:

I'll check into Alameda and those areas, thanks for the tip. Any weather is fine as long as it's not L.A. weather and I see the sun once a week.

Disco Bay would be nice if you had a heli but the everyday trek would kick the shit out of me. I live in Dublin and if you do head to the East Bay - MAKE SURE it is the east East Bay as in the other side of the hill as called the tri-valley. The reason that I said Concord is because they are more easy on ordinances. Dublin, Pleasanton, San Ramon are all more of the - you can't park that on my street type of places. Every time I park my trailer on the street (I usually park in the driveway), within two days I have the oh so famous no peal off sticker put on there telling me that I have 48 hours to remove it and a friendly reminder that I could have been charged $100 for my first offense. It would be a great place if you can find a place with the storage for the trailer as it is a very nice area. If you find a place that you want someone to check out (in the areas mentioned above), I can take a peak and send some photos your way. Just let me know.

I get the same thing in Ballard (Seattle area) when I park my Toyota on my street, or my trailer :mad3:. Fawking irritating because there was a saturn down the street that didn't move for 9 months and had a flat tire, never saw a sticker.

Dude, that's a huge offer - thank you. I might just take you up on that. Thanks!

check out the north bay for a shorter commute- golden gate is not nearly as bad as the bay bridge. Marin is nice but $$, sonoma county gets cheaper and still is less than 45 mins to the city. not much wheeling is the area (or anywhere in the bay area for that matter) but lots of other great outdoor shizzle, if you're into that stuff.:D

Check his commute hours...10am in and 10pm out...bridge should be not too bad at 10 am and basically 65mph on the way out at 10pm.

ugh. unless you like the suburbs, mexicans and shitty houses you'll hate concord. i've only been here 8 months and can't wait until our lease runs out so we can move. driving into SF everyday will also suck balls... it's a pretty good drive even without traffic.

pleasant hill is better but only marginally.

if you're looking for someone to wheel with once you're here let me know...
