: AZ wheelin june 22??

I'm lookin for a place to go wheelin near phoenix when i come out to visit and i'm havin a hard time findin places that aren't closed. Also its been quite a while since i've been out there so I dont know how to get to a lot of the places i've found on the net.

I'm lookin for something that will actually challenge the newly built Stinkbug, but not to the point of breakin parts. I do have to drive it back home on sunday. Also the farther north the better, i'm stayin in cave creek and dont really wanna drive out to east mesa to wheel for a couple hours. some people have mentioned upper and lower terminator, which sound do-able, but no one i know out there has a truck that would be up to it, so I need to find others that would go with us. any suggestions? anyone wanna go wheelin with us?

oh BTW this will be my girlfriends first real wheelin, so i'd like to make it real fun for her. then maybe she wont mind me workin on the rig so much.

Lower Terminator is pretty easy, my K30 had no troubles at all, even with 132" wheel base (no by-pass and took the "hard" lines when there was a choice). We didn't do upper. Most of the rigs with us were full-size full bodied and most weren't willing to sacrifice. I've never been on upper but I've heard it is not full-size friendly. If my K30 weren't down right now (I cut the wheel base to 112" and I'm building a buggy body) I would be glad to go with you. Oh well, maybe next time.

well it looks like runnin the terminators is gonna be our best choice. I'd say meet at 8am somewhere along the 17. I'll take suggestions on a meeting place. I'm not gonna be used to the heat so i wanna try to get out early and stay as cool as possible. Let me know if you wanna come along. I'd love to meet some more wheelers and play on the rocks.

Make sure the trails are still open. I've never been to Terminator, but as far as I know, all BLM, Forest and State Trust land are closed right now. I would hate to see you waste a trip, or get a big fat fine.

Have fun!

from what i have been told and what i've been able to find on the web the terminators are open. i wanted to run crown king and raw deal but was told that they were closed by people on this BB tho i cant find info on the USFS web sites. the BLM site said they were under fire restrictions but they didn't say the land was closed. If anyone knows for sure one way or the other or knows where i can get info on that area please let me know. also if anyone has directions to the trail head, please share, i haven't run the trail before and haven't wheeled near there in over a year. thanks.

The Terminators are open. I would suggest meeting much earlier to beat the heat.

Ok what time would you suggest. I'm not much of a morning person and i'm driving out the night before so i dont wanna be wakin up at 4 am to go wheelin. I'm open to any and all suggestions since you guys live there and know whats up better than i do. I'll be driving out friday afternoon/evening and leaving sunday, and i just wanna go wheelin with someone while i'm there.

Now that it is summer I plan on unloading my trailer at 5:30 am (suns already up by then). Usually back to the trailer before noon, home in 45 minutes, plenty of time for a nap :D

I might be interested in doing L. Terminator on the 22nd.

I'd say to meet at 6am and get rolling by 6:30 though. That way we should be done by Noon, and get home before it gets too hot.

Anyone else interested in going? I can lead, I know the way pretty good. :D

Maybe I'll have stuff close to back together by then, if so, I may be up for the run.

Ok 6am meeting it is, man am i gonna be asleep :emb: oh well whatever. Where should we meet at? If your willing to lead that would be great since i dont know the area well. one of my friends buddies may be bringing his bronco out and me and my girl will be in stinky. how long does it take to run lower? think there would be time to run upper as well before it gets too hot, or are both trails fairly long?

Meet at 6am at the Agua Fria River crossing.

Take I-17 North of Phoenix to the Table Mesa Rd Exit.
Turn Left, go over the Freeway overpasses and then take a Right. This road starts paved and then turns to gravel. Take a Right at the first "Y" and a Right at the second "Y" The Agua Fria riverbed is pretty wide, you shouldn't miss it. The road comes straight down into the river bed and then straight across. Meet at the bottom.

As for running both, we can see what time we get down with lower, if we breeze through it we should have time for Upper.

Lower is easy. The IFS Pissfinder only had trouble at one spot (and only because Nissan steering sux). I'd have liked to see Upper, but it just wasn't in the cards.

Hey Dustin, i thought you were on here. You should do fine on lower from what i've heard. besides you gotta go, russell needs a ride :p. I think running upper is still up in the air right now, probably will decide based on how long lower takes and how many of us wanna run it. see you out there.

Better check the closures as this gets closer. Parts of that area are on fire right now. Even if they get it put out, they may close it to keep more fires from cropping up.

I'm planning on being at the river crossing a little before 6am to unload, is anyone else planning on towing? or are y'all driving?
how 'bout a final roll call too?

Look for a brown CJ-7 with some, heh, *mild* body damage.

Blue97TJ, as of when was there fires back there? Where did you get this info?

StinkBug

I'll be drivin in from San Diego the night before, and i'll try to be there as early as possible. Hopefully I can get to AZ early in the evening and get some sleep, otherwise i may be a little slow in the morning. I'll be drivin the only black amigo with 10" of lift and 35s in town.

Also i talked to my buddy russell last night and he said his friend wasn't sure about comin cause he's worried about body damage on his bronco (no boulder bars yet). I told him he should come and check it out and ride with someone if he decides not to drive it. Will someone have a spare seat just in case? I already have 3 in my rig, which is gonna be tight.

AzWebMan

I should have some spare room, if need be.

Likely, he'll want to skip it. Without rocker-pannel protection, he'll likely get into it coming out of the Z-Turn.

I heard this on the news too. But from the way they described it, it was a brush fire next to the freeway -- not off on BLM land or anything. So it shouldn't affect us.

I guess people don't think that their glowing red-hot CATs won't set the dry grass on fire when they pull off the highway...

Hey Mike, How much belly draggin and rocker carnage should be expected on these trails. My old nerfs got turned into a few different things and now one of em is the front bumper, and i have yet to finish my belly skid. I'm just wondering if i should go pick up the steel for the new nerfs, and fab up a little skid for the tcase before i come out. I really shoulda built em by now, but i been lazy

Dallas

AzWebMan
06-18-2002, 10:03 AM
I can't think of much on L. Terminator that really *Requires* that much skid plate protection. As for rocker pannels, with your extremely SWB, you should be able to pick a line to keep your rocker pannel off the Z-Turn -- I usually do, unless I'm going for air-time. I do get on the rockerpannel pretty hard at the end, but that is an optional line:

http://www.azchatfield.net/Pics/Thumb.asp?W=400&F=2_020515115517d.jpg (http://www.azchatfield.net/Pics/View.asp?ID=156&A=26&S=250)

I'm not that tall either. 2.5" lift on my CJ-7 -- I did clock the transfercase and fab up a skid plate which netted me about 4" of clearance. I think I'm around 17" - 18" at the skid, and I don't hit anything on Lower, except on some of the optional obstacles/lines.

Upper is a little different, as it does have some rocks that can roll around on ya. But it is still not that bad.

StinkBug
06-18-2002, 12:03 PM
thanks mike. i'm gonna pick up the tube for the nerfs today at lunch and try to have em done for the trip out. I've been meaning to put em together for a while and its about time i got to work. I'll also slap together a small skid for the tcase, i'm not all that worried about it, i've probably got 21-24" under it and it only hangs down 1/2" below the xmember, but i'd rather be safe. See you saturday.

Yep, but its more *fun* than the so-called *hard* line :flipoff2:

Besides, I figured that would be the only way to get the Bronco through with minimal rocker panel damage. Going over the Terminator would probably doom both rocker panels:

I really appreciate all the help you guys gave me. You are definitely an awesome group of people and i'd Love to wheel with you again some time. Looks like my outer shaft survived OK and the inner is dead along with the joint. I replaced the fried shifter cable saturday night and covered it with fuel hose to hopefully keep it together longer this time. Other than those 2 my only damage is sheet metal, and lots of it. Tho i did have one of my new to me 35s blow out on the way back to san diego last night. No problem tho, just changed it out and was back underway.
