: Project Tugger CJ-10
4krawln 08-07-2007, 11:05 AM Here at Xtreme Jeep in Tampa we recently completed the fabrication work on the owners new project CJ-10. It started as the tugger for the US Armed Forces and we have but 1 Tons front and rear, Lengthed Rear, Added Rear Bed Fabbed off of a CJ-7 Rear tub. The Motor is the Nissan Diesel, Auto Tranny, Dana 300 T/C, Dana 60 rear, 10 Bolt Front, and put Scrambler Top being fitted. Followed with pics, let me know what you think.

grn97TJ 08-07-2007, 11:35 AM Looks like an interesting project helton, but why use the 10 bolt? I know its cheap and readily available but if your doing this much why skimp out on the front axle? :mr-t: has gold chains bigger than the 10 bolt :flipoff2:
4krawln 08-07-2007, 11:39 AM Was in a package deal that we got and will upgrade at a later time.
4krawln 08-07-2007, 11:41 AM finalized
Pretty cool bro....different, I like it.
sharpie1k 08-07-2007, 12:14 PM I like the fab work, don't like the cab, but that's just me.
As for the tons, are you putting them on coilovers, springs, or what?
And really? A 10b front? Will it handle the (what I assume to be) 38s?
blkntancj 08-07-2007, 12:29 PM And really? A 10b front? Will it handle the (what I assume to be) 38s?[/QUOTE]
X2. And why did you scrap the D70 rear it came with for the 14B SF?
Other than that I think it is an awesome project.
resqme 08-07-2007, 12:30 PM VERY cool look, I like it.
The 10 bolt has to go...I'm guessing you won't have to wait long for it to go on its own, like maybe leaving the parking lot with that much torque on 38's.
chris demartini 08-07-2007, 12:58 PM That nose makes my eyes hurt. Needs a CJ hood and grille.
Is that c-channel frame going to be strong enough?
mxracer33x 08-07-2007, 01:05 PM I love the look. Id wheel the crap out of it with my running gear under it. it sits great on the 42's
Greg82 08-07-2007, 04:15 PM I like the look of it. But it looks like the rear tires are going to rub. And the nose has to go!
XJben 08-07-2007, 04:23 PM but then no one would know that it is a 10...then the project would be pointless
Greg82 08-07-2007, 04:27 PM but then no one would know that it is a 10...then the project would be pointless
Ok the nose can stay. But any CJ guy can tell that it is something different the scrambler half cab looks totally diffenent.
We Also need a finished side shot of it. Is there any other jeep truck builds around?
Action Fab 08-07-2007, 04:52 PM I think it would look better with a CJ-7 grill and CJ-10 fenders.
YJ4LIFE 08-07-2007, 06:41 PM awesome. I want one.
wtr40rock 08-07-2007, 08:35 PM i daily drove one for 8month's with 3.57's and got 48mpg!!!!!
TeenyCAR 08-07-2007, 10:15 PM That's one odd looking front clip. I personally think it would look "better" with a regular 7 clip but then it wouldn't look like a 10 so maybe I just need to stare at it for a while. I don't think I've seen one of those since back in the old days when Chris Duram used one in comp. I wonder how it would look with just a 7 grill and keep the 10 fenders?
Jeepskate 08-07-2007, 10:33 PM Entertained it for a moment a few years ago:

TeenyCAR 08-07-2007, 10:39 PM Hmmm...maybe a YJ grill would go better with the square headlight fenders.
offroadjunkie 08-07-2007, 10:48 PM i daily drove one for 8month's with 3.57's and got 48mpg!!!!!
shit then why did you mess with it!! if i had a cool vehicle like that which got 48mpg it would be my most prized possession!
have to say i like what it turned out to be though, great find
jagular7 08-08-2007, 07:26 AM This is a cool project and one that I wanted to start.
The 10-slot grille is what distinguishes the CJ10 for the other 'CJ' series Jeeps. The actual vehicle is an Austalian vehicle. The CJ10 is a modified CJ body for a CJ pickup series with the 1-ton configuration (D44 front, D60 rear, diesel, auto/4-sp, tcase and a pickup bed).
The military required a toter so a contractor took the CJ10 body, mated it to a modified Wagoneer frame (similar to the Australian version), added the 3.3l Nissan diesel mated to a Chrysler 727 and a NP198 tcase to meet the military requirements. The rear axle is a D70 with 4.88 and Powerlock. The tcase is a modified case without a high gear. Case is all aluminum, similar to a NP208 case (6 bolt round pattern, 23-spline input) and I never verified the gearing (but would guestimate 2.71:1). They added a turtleback in 1/4" thickness, added ~1500#s of dead steel weight, and called it a CJ10A.
What is nice is both the CJ10 and CJ10A have a limited production run, (1800 and 900 IIRC).
I had plans for building my CJ10A into a crawler of sorts, but I'm actually looking to sell my CJ10A as I can't get it titled in KS due to the VIN. The VIN ties the vehicle to offhighway and that is how KS sees it. The original intention of the original mfr was to pull airplanes as slow speeds. Even with tcase swapped out to drive at highway speeds, KS will not title in the state of KS. I know there are several states that will title without a problem. Check out CJ10A (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=601905)

BeatCJ 03-09-2008, 09:55 AM I have a CJ-10a tug that I plan on getting to at the end of summer, I need a little help. What did the wheelbase end up? I like the way this one looks, my plan was to go to about 112". What WMS, and what tire size. I'd like a little narrower, was planning on Waggy width, and am looking at 38's. I'm still in the collecting parts phase, so any help is good. Thanks

I tried to get some info this past summer from this guy but never got an answer back. I know they used Chevy full width axles, so 69 inch WMS front and 67" WMS rear. They appear to be 37-39's tires? but someone said they were 42's, not sure though. Wagoneers used 61" and 65" WMS depending on the standard or wide track width. I think the wheelbase is around 114-118 on this one, mine is going to be aroung 116" I have a CJ tub I already hacked up and will be leaving the door openings there and make short doors for access to the back for passengers, I am leaving the D70 rear and buying a D60 for the front DRW or a SRW with spacers to match the rear width and use standard center Hummer H1 wheels to narrow it a little. Are you going to be running the SD33 or a different engine?
BeatCJ 03-10-2008, 11:11 PM Thanks for the info. I don't have an SD-33, not really trying to find one. I think if I was going to go diesel, a Cummins 6AT3.4 (Onan L634) would be my choice, there are a couple of sources. At this point, I have a 360, a BH that fits my T-19, that I plan to throw in it and run. Go the doubler route, so 4.88s will be good. First have to swap a 4.3 TBI into the DD CJ-5. Right now I have a Waggy front 44 that I had already collected, but I've been looking for a 60. I think I will end up going too big for a 44, so why even install it? Of course, it would get it on the road (the first time) cheaper. Dutchman Motorsports, relatively close to me can narrow the 70 for what I think is a reasonable price. Guessing from the photos, I don't see 42's, but sleight of hand always fools me. HS graduation trip is eating into my Jeep Parts fund...
dustyglyde 03-10-2008, 11:56 PM What are you going to do for a cage? I'm building a tug also and want to go exo to protect that butt ugly front and tin top. I just hate the way an exo looks and am looking for ideas.
xjemily 03-11-2008, 07:49 AM i like the unique idea of the project but that front is a face only a mother could love.nice fab work, overall it looks great:D
jeepinwilson 03-11-2008, 08:12 AM Yeah they are ugly, I think they kind of grow on you though like giant pimple that you cannot help to stare at, kind of like a bad car accident. I am going to change mine to a TJ grille and tube fenders so I can at least see past the fenders. I am sticking with the SD33 for now and throw in a doubler and run 37's or 39's, I do not work far from home so commuting will be ok as I do not have to go over 40 most of the time so power is not that big of an issue for me, until I get sick of it then I will put an LSX engine in it.
glp86 03-11-2008, 02:53 PM Man I saw one of these on ebay a few weeks ago. Guy wanted $6500 for it! I thought it would be an awesome project. I'm glad to see somebody building one. I'd be interested to see the inside of it. Also is the top removable?
dustyglyde 03-11-2008, 06:49 PM The top is removable. Here is a link to a few pics of mine.

You'll get plenty of cash at the scrap yard from all the heavy ass shit you strip off of it.
BeatCJ 03-12-2008, 02:32 PM What are you going to do for a cage?
Just fit it in tight to the top, on the inside. I'm not a fan of the exo look, either. It's a a relatively simple shape for a cage, A and B Hoop, windshield bar and harness bar, cross bracing on the back. I'm a fan of impact bars at the doors, they will help with fore and aft triangulation, too. Of course, I don't mind hopping over the door sill on my CJ-5, either. The guy I will have build it has done NHRA dragsters, so he's used to fitting things into tight spaces.
mcamish01 03-13-2008, 10:03 AM Whats all this crap about swaping in CJ front clips and fenders?? You don't build a CJ10 so that you can then go and swap a normal clip on in and look like everyone else, you do it to be different. The body work looks great and while the axle choice is definitly not what I'd do I'm definitly digging the rest of the rig. Props for the unique build....now go wheel the crap out of it and smoke those front axleshafts.:D

Truth! If you're going to ruin a perfectly good military jeep (and when I say "ruin" I mean make it useless to military vehicle collectors not ruin it to us as wheelers), then keep that "face only a mother could love look".
Here's one that one of my customers built for Disney World. Now that is ruined.
They changed the grill to take away that distinctive jeep look. Crazy colors were painted onto it and a new drivetrain was installed. They also built a CJ-8 for them that ended up with a Ford 9" rear with a small motor attached to the pinion to drive it and an engine compartment full of 12V batteries. I believe both vehicles went to the Animal Kingdom where being "green" is big so instead of producing carbon emissions with a gasoline engine, they want quiet battery power.

guidolyons 03-15-2008, 02:12 PM I'm diggin' the CJ-10. I kinda like it...like those Australian cattle dogs... a face only a mother could love. :flipoff2:
Good God, Soilant Green. :barf: That disney thing is a travesty.
jeepinwilson 03-27-2008, 06:54 AM It is funny how you guys talk crap about other people changing the front clip on a CJ10 because it will make it worthless to others, when you see all the other rigs on here that have stretched wheelbases and flat fender/no fenders when they were not original that way. The beauty of owning a Jeep is to make it your own, who gives a shit what another guy does with their rig anyway. Everyone will and is entitled to build how they want to stand out the way they want it to. Lighten up, but that fugly ass Disney rig is a major concern in the thought process......
DonkDonk 04-10-2008, 08:59 AM I am interested in seeing more pics of the Xtreme tug. Any updates?

BeatCJ 04-12-2008, 12:30 PM Yup, that wins hands down. For me, the issue with the tug grille and fenders is that there were only around 2300 built. Not that it should stay stock, I don't plan on doing that, but if it came from a tug, that's too cool to give up.
fuelnjktr 05-24-2008, 11:20 PM I have some left over original fenders from an 86 CJ10 if anyone is interested.
Phantom1016 05-25-2008, 06:31 AM I have some left over original fenders from an 86 CJ10 if anyone is interested.
Thats a sweet rig. We have a ton of CJ10s here at Barksdale. Always thought about getting a DRMO one, never thought of making a bed like that though, I think it looks great.
fuelnjktr 05-26-2008, 12:06 AM Guess I pissed off some users by posting pics on several threads. Bought the truck 2 months ago and was hoping to meet some other owners and see if there are any clubs out there with other CJ10 owners. Thanks for the comments, do you happen to know of a steering column that can be purchased to replace the stock column?
Phantom1016 05-27-2008, 07:46 AM I know some of the older chevy truck steering colums were used in the late 70s, early 80s, but I dont know when they stopped. Worth a look into though...
Nice work on the grafting of the added length to the "bed".
dustyglyde 05-28-2008, 06:08 AM Any updated pics???
firejpn 05-28-2008, 06:46 PM I am good friends with those guys having worked there for several years. The build is for most purposes done. The axles have been regeared and tires trued drives straight at highway speeds not speeding on the highway mind you. I will try to get some new pics up for you guys. The hard top is off and it has a full k-line soft top similar to cj-8 top to each there own, I prefer the hard top look. Still gonna get a whole repaint but it is all one color and an attention getter.

A stock CJ column won't work? That's what I have collected. What's your wheelbase?
a360chief 05-30-2008, 02:12 PM I have seen 2 done where the CJ10 cab was grafted onto a waggy frame to get 109" W/B. They used early S-10 aftermarket step-side beds. That seemed like an easier option for someone not wanting to keep the original engine. Easy axle upgrades, as well.
I had pic's of the one of the export-only 4x4 CJ10's with a truck bed in Australia, buy I cannot find it now.

any updates or pictures? what rear springs did they use on it?
MonsterSeven 06-20-2008, 07:54 PM how would one go about getting a CJ10 grill? and yes, the search button only brings up crap. </hijack>
jeepinwilson 06-23-2008, 06:53 AM yahoo has a cj10 members group, if you signed up you could most likely get one from one of the members or at least where to find one. I happen accross them occasionally. If I see one again I can PM you the info. I have not decided if I am going to part with mine, it has kinda grown on me since it has sat in my garage while I am building it.

BeatCJ 07-05-2008, 04:35 PM jeepinwilson, are those the original Tug springs in front? I like the height. That's about where I want mine to be.
jeepinwilson 07-07-2008, 08:08 AM yeah they are the stock CJ10A (wagoneer) springs, it will come down another inch roughly after the weight is sitting on the rear, it has 23" clearance and a flat belly with 36's. So, as it sits now it is 83" outside to outside front, 81" rear and 78.5" to the top of the windshield frame.
