it's actually more like a 4.0. 3.0 is a odd motor.

Mine gets 15-16mpg on the street and a little over 20mpg on the highway, but I have heard as good as 25mpg on the highway

Its a 2.8 or 2.9 jack ass! (2.8 from 83 till 85) and 2.9 from 86 till 90)

And yes, the 2.9 gets GREAT mileage as long as you keep in maintained.

The 2.8 doesn't so much I hear, and parts are getting harder to find.

My stock 2.8 got way over 20. (maybe 24?) and with 37s i still managed 17+ on the highway turning 3000 rpms. They are great little motors.

I'm guessing he meant its more LIKE the 4.0L than a 3.0 (and it is. The 4.0L is based off the 2.9L's block).

.

Mine did close to 26 MPG (hwy-only at 60 MPH) when it was bone stock (5-speed, P205 tires & 3.73 gears).

After putting on the 35s and regearing to 5.13, it dropped to about 23.

One thing with these engines, they HAVE to turn enough RPM to get good MPG (yes, this is counter to the popular belief high RPM = bad MPG).
If the engine doesn't spin at least 2500 RPM at 60 MPH, it's going to use more fuel to maintain speed (due to lugging).

Thanks...I didn't know what was under my hood:flipoff2::shaking:

....

Also watch for valve cover leaks, these motors are known for them. The 2.9 that is!:grinpimp:

17 MPG really? My gold colored one with a 2.9 & on 32" SXs gets around 10 - 12 MPG, but it's kinda REALLY tore up, it's about as aerodynamic as a crumpled up piece of aluminum foil. :D

Don't forget that the lifters rattle on some of the 2.9s, & the only way to change them out to new ones is to pull the heads. Just like any car / truck there's bound to be some problems with them.

Then if you know whats under the hood, why did you say 4.0?

Thats almost as wise as saying my bronco II has a 3.8 in it...hell, it's LIKE a 4.0 and 2.9..its got 6 cylinders, efi....you know......the basic liknesses!!!

The 84 5 speed I had was doing well to get 17 on the highway. Of course, being at 8000ft elevation probably didn't help much.

for some reason i got about 20mpg weather i was being easy on my 5spd or hard like 5500-6000rpm shifts compared to 2500 but i think 20mpg is about right.
