I am in the process of building an on board welder. I just wanted to get some other ideas on where to mount the 2nd alternator.

I have a 4.0 yj, no AC, but I do have an OBA setup.

my first idea was to put the 2nd on the support brackets for the OBA.

Any one have any better places for this. most of the searches I have found the pictures don't work or the links are no longer there.

Sandwich a plate between the compressor and the bracket, and look for an alternator with a flat mount. I believe if you go through the http://www.mobiweld.com site you find links for alternator houses...one of them has the 'flat mount' type:

http://www.penntexusa.com/

The links aren't working for me right now, but maybe later they'll be up again...

Here is one way.

Paul's website

For more info go to www.jeepshots.com (http:JeepShots then go to tech then Onboard welder. Kepp in mind that is a 2.5L but that are pretty simular.

what alternater is that? is that a ford one? what is the out put, what vehicle did you get it from. Also what should I look for when searching.

it looks like you are going to run that pully off the york right?

I know its not a alternator, but I fit a saginaw pump where you are talking about fitting another alternater. Just don't forget about to take into consideration that an alternator requires much more turning force then other accessories, and therefore requires the belt almost rides 75% of the pulley. Check out some of jeeps service manuals. Every vehicle in there, the alternator is the only device where the belt almost almost completely wraps around the pulley. Trying to find a belt legth and a tensioning method for an alternator in that location may be difficult. I had troubles finding the correct belt size until I moved idlers around.

Pic of 2nd power steering pump, I have a YORK in my jeep as well. Its a tight fit. :) Matt

I saved my stock alt bracket from my pre-york alternator mounting, and used that over the P/S pump.
When I installed the York idler pulley and bracket, I noticed it made a nice, long flat surface I could use to attach the old alt bracket to easily. I used a piece of angle iron and just bolted the bracket to the angle iron. It was a *little* bit flexy so I welded on a small brace.
At first, my belt routing was York, welder, water pump,( as pictured in my post) but that wasn't ideal because with the way the old alt bracket is mounted, the adjustment slot doesn't tighten the belt; it just turns in an arc without affecting belt length. Also, I wasn't comfortable with the engine RPM's needed to get some of the voltage settings I needed for welding thicker metal.
I solved both problems by swapping out my P/S pump pulley for a 2 grove model, and drive the weldinater directly off that. Now the weldinater turns faster at the same engine RPM's due to gearing, and I have real easy adjustment (I could easily remove the belt and only install it for welding, but without being energized, it doesn't take rob any engine power)

hey bob..

those brackets for the alternator on the driver's side.. think they'd bolt up to a YJ 4.0 block if i swapped out the P/S pump for a saginaw rotated down? I've been playing around with adding a 2nd alt just for this purpose of welding, and looking like doing a saginaw ps pump upgrade is gonna be the way to go to have my cake and eat it too.

How about this. I've got two alternators and the york all on the passenger side of the motor. The alternators share a common mount, the factory alternator is rotated down. The york is mounted on it's side on top of the factory AC mount.

nice. how did you rotate the stock one down and howd you mount the second one.. that picture doesnt give me a lot of clues.

Heres mine mounted to an AMC 360. It sits on top of the mount for the AC compressor.

I rotated the alternator down using the factory single mount, and welded a new mount for the double mount. I'll try to get a better pic if I remember.

I built a mount off the side of my vertically mounted double pulley York compressor. It's 100% isolated from the engine and I use solenoids to disconnect one battery when it's time to weld. 100 amp alternator works great. its also on a pivoting mount so I just pop the belt on the outer pulley of the York, tighten up the alternator and weld.

O yea I've been runnig this welder for about five years found the basic plans here.

I used a kilby combo alt. pulley and made my own brackets... I have an extra for a pre-HO 4.0l that I made (if anyone is interested)

And the extra - AC pump has 90 degree different mounts on the pre 91 4.0l:
