: rod bearing ID by numbers??
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 03:02 PM i got a set of rod bearings(they say 'std'), the ones in my motor say '76' and the next line reads '6k32k' course this is metric, does that mean standard or 10 over or...
please help:confused:
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 03:04 PM how bad does a rod bearing look to cause an audible knock? mine are into the copper slightly, but dont look to be enough to create a knock? maybe its a main or?? (287,000 miles...)
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 05:26 PM well im gonna talk to myself here, since you guys are all still at work, heheee, i pulled a main, they look great, my rod caps are stamped with 'B" and number 3 is 'C". i think this identifies the grind on the crank, "A" being std??
SeaBass44 06-11-2002, 05:34 PM Call Pat, he has tried to call but line bussy. get some plasti gauge and it comes with it's own scale to read:)
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 05:50 PM pat called while i was at the dealer, there head mechanic couldnt even tell me what size the bearings were---they do warranty work on my dads taco:nuke: :nuke: fawkin idiots...
John H 06-11-2002, 05:55 PM i called my engine builder and he wasn't any help. He also said to plasti guage them. They make STD / .25mm / .50mm / .75mm.
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 06:17 PM my haynes manual say there is 3 bearing sizes, A,B and C and the mains are 3, 4 and 5...ive got 3 for mains, and 3 B's and a C for rods....how the fawk do i know if these are 10 over, 20, 30....
........25, .5, .75:rasta: :rasta: im so confused:rasta:

plasti gauge!:D ask Pat the clerence, I think he said 2 thosands.0002? or .002 I be bad at math too:p :p :p
John H 06-11-2002, 06:26 PM Just pick up some plasti guage from a local parts store and measure the new ones.
HOW TO USE PLASTIGAGE
When checking connecting rod bearings, turn the crankshaft so that the journal to be checked is about 30° from bottom dead center.
Remove the bearing cap and wipe the oil from the bearing insert and crankshaft journal.
Tear off a piece of Plastigage as long as the full bearing width. (Tear through both the envelope and plastic thread at the same time.) Lay the piece of Plastigage across the full width of the lower bearing shell about 1/4" off center.
Install and tighten the bearing cap to the proper torque specifications. Do not rotate the crankshaft while making this check.
Remove the bearing cap. The flattened Plastigage will adhere to either the bearing shell or the crankshaft.
Compare the width of the flattened Plastigage at the WIDEST point with the graduations on the piece of envelope torn off in Step 2. The number within the graduations, which matches the flattened Plastigage width, indicates the total bearing clearance in thousandths of an inch or in millimeters. If the width of the flattened Plastigage does not exactly match one of the envelope graduations, interpolation can be used to determine the fraction of a thousandth in the same manner as when using micrometers.
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 06:32 PM whats interpolation:flipoff2: :flipoff2: , alright, ill get my lazy ass to the parts store for some plastigage....whats the torque on a rod bolt nuts? it was like 25# back in the vw days....:smokin:
John H 06-11-2002, 06:51 PM interpolation....you got me. I just copied that from some site.:flipoff2:
Rod bolts are 45 ft lb.

Must be that one.:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Bones 06-11-2002, 07:29 PM If my rod bearing wasn't welded to the crank when I torn mine down I was going to do this :( but I ended up with a $750 machine shop bill, but I had new pistons, rings, seals, freeze plugs, t-chain, water pump, oil pump, gaskets, head surfaced :emb: and all. Can you say domino effect?
Good luck Paul 280K is a lot of miles.
Chris
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 07:34 PM im guessing the oil clearance shouldnt be more than 2 or 3 thousands on rods and mains??
John H 06-11-2002, 07:39 PM My chilton manual says .001-.0022. I think that's alittle tight though. .002-.003 is good if you run thicker oil like 20w-50. The factory spec is based more aroun 5w-30.

Chris No I call that a rebuild on an engine that was toast:rasta:

Oh come awn!! :rasta: It only knocked from Minnesota to Missouri :D Mad for an interesting 6-7 hours
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 08:31 PM plastigage reads, just fatter than the .051 (red), guess i need a set of 25's? i measured on 2 bearings to be sure and they were identical....can you get a set johny boy?? ill come and get them and they will accompany some $$ and a freshset of heinikin's in the little keg cans like you drink them! any chance on returning the std's(not sexually transmitted diseases, im keeping them)? sorry......im so :rasta: !
John H 06-11-2002, 09:20 PM I hope you mean .0051. What color plasti gauge did you get? Red? Do you have or can get access to a set of calipers so you can measure the crank? If it is that loose a set of .25mm (.010) under bearings won't work. You might have to turn the crank.
.0051
- .0100
-----------
= + .0049 wich means NO CLEARANCE.
Hope you understand what i'm saying.
If you want me to get a set i can...but maybe you should talk to an engine builder first.
I should be able to return the bearings.
And you can keep the std's to youself :flipoff2: :D
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 09:26 PM RED plastigage, 0.051----0.152 mm heres a pic of the crank with the plastigage stain still there
John H 06-11-2002, 09:32 PM Are you sure it's .051. I'm looking at a green plasti guage that says use (red) for .002-.006 and use (blue) for .004-.009
You need to test if with green plasti guage. That red stuff looks like its to thick.
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 09:43 PM flip it over dork! im talking mm, not thousands of an inch:rasta:
0.051---0.152mm or 0.002-0.006 for inch, which leads me to think im kool on the bearings becuase the 0.002 on the inch side is about how fat that plastigage went when torqued!!!!!!!
John H 06-11-2002, 09:47 PM OK. If you would of said .051mm then it would have been easier.:flipoff2: .051mm = .002 " There cool put them in! Need more
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 09:50 PM yipppeee!!!!!!!!!! thanks john!
John H 06-11-2002, 09:51 PM So whats up with the trip to dusy-ershim. when you going?
Booger Weldz 06-11-2002, 09:55 PM the begining of august, most likely the 5th, it takes a couple 3-4 days to do the trail comfortably and im bringing my son and girlfriend and they like to camp, hike and fish tooo. its not a really challenging trail, just looooooonnnnggg and super scenic with really good fishing at 8500-9000 feet. bring plenty of ice and lots of beer!
John H 06-11-2002, 09:57 PM Cool! I like to camp, fish, and drink beer! I'll get the time off. Even though it's not a challenge i have to do it at least once.:D
