: Can one of you Experts help???
EastCoast1st 06-11-2002, 03:23 PM I called 4 Wheel Parts and ordered 5.13's for front and rear Dana 60's HP with rear locker and new front Carrier. I called all the local shops to get them setup and they all refered me to a guy that is supposed to be an expert with 40 years experience. He set the front up in about 2 hours, went to set the rear and the Ring gear will not grab the pinion, it's about 1/4 of an inch off. I called 4 Wheel Parts and talked to the dumbass operators who sent me another locker, same thing happend. What is the problem? I thought it might be the new gear not being thick enough but it is about 3/8 inch thinker than stock.
UGET IT 06-11-2002, 03:44 PM Seems to me your Gear setup guy should know???? Call another gear shop and ask them what they thing the problem is.
Ramstein 06-11-2002, 04:05 PM Check to see if the gears mesh. My guess is they dont and you have a 5.13 pinion and a 4.56 or higher ring gear.
If the carrier was the wrong application, chances are it wouldnt even fit in the housing.
yup, your expert gear setup guy should know!
WytNkls 06-11-2002, 04:23 PM Maybe the rear locker is a fast carrier and not a slow? Just a thought?
matt-
Ramstein 06-11-2002, 04:25 PM BTW im not an expert. But I thought about it a little more and it could be a number of issues. You need to be damn sure of what type of case you have. Is it H.D. or standard. There is an offset difference on the carrier at either 4.10 or 4.56 ratio and this offset can be different depending on the application. (I ran into this a few years back on a front 60 HP Ford).
Good luck.:D
HyCaliberConsecrator 06-11-2002, 05:04 PM Did you check what the carrier break is on a D60. Most rears are like 4.10 and up and 3.73 and down. I don't know what your 60 break is or if there is any but it's worth a second opinon. Call an indy shop and :flipoff2: those chain stores. Good luck.

EastCoast1st 06-11-2002, 07:59 PM The front was alright with the new carrier and all. It was the rear that is wrong. I think they make the locker for 4.56 and down, but they sent me the right one that is for 4.56 and up. Thanks for the help I will check in too your alls suggestions tomorrow.

Is there any chance the rear is a D61? I've never heard of a HP D61 (you do know what HP means right?) but I suppose it's possible. What gears were in it? What is it out of? Where did you get it? Who built it? I'm really surprised your "expert" doesn't know this.
TONY K 06-11-2002, 09:13 PM Just to be clear, both diffs are HP Dana 60's?
If so, I think I just answered this question on another post, here goes again.
Dana 60 ratio splits for carriers.
high speed is up to 4.10
low speed is 4.56 and down
Most times you would use a high speed case with a low speed gear set if it was not a spicer and was HP or reverse rotation.
This applies to all except Richmond private label gears. (At least this is the only case I've found for Rev 5.13)
Doesn't matter what the outside of the box says. Yours probably says Genuine Gear on it. They are only a reboxing company and don't own a gear cutting machine. That means you could have anybody's gears in your box, maybe even Richond private label.
So, check the gear set to make sure you really got a 5.13 gear set, and if you do, take your rear locker back to FWPW and get a low speed unit. If you didn't get a 5.13 gear set in your box, kick the shit out of the gear setup guy who should have checked it first.
If you can tell me again what kind of locker you got, I will tell you the part number you need.
see ya,

Independent4x 06-11-2002, 09:30 PM the other way to be sure is to get the bill of material # off the axle tube...using this # a competent gear retailer will be able to reference what "exactly" you need for the actual axle you are working on.
just sounds like a case of general info where specifics were needed.
EastCoast1st 06-12-2002, 07:35 PM I had too much work to do today to checkout all of your suggestions. However, I thought about something and brought it up to a mechanic that I know and he said it might have something to do with it. So here it goes; I ordered the master installation kit with the Gears and along with everything else. I was in and out of the Garage at various times when the guy was putting it all together. He never once used the new bearings, seals, etc., out of the installation kit. I asked him about it and he mumbled something about have to use the stock ones first. Then while I was up there yesterday He was looking for the bolts for the Ring and I spoke up and said the new kit came with them and to add fuel to the fire he states "aw I dont need that shit." So could the problem be that he used all of the old bearings and stuff instead of the new ones?

take your parts somewhere else! this guy is a dipstick:rolleyes: pay him for his time, tell him you won't come back and will tell people to avoid him, and have the work he did do checked!!!
Sundowner 06-13-2002, 04:07 AM sometimes OEMS will use thick ringgears to eliminate the need for two carriers in the same axle, espically when in the same application.(like a 3/4 ton that might ahve 3.73 or 4.10 gears in a front 44) Dodge did this and it left us scratchin our heads for the better part of the day.
