What are the pros and cons of toy truck axles? Do you need a center rear output transfer case? If so what are people using? How would a cruiser rear and a scout2 d44 front work out? (not sure how close the widths are). looking for help.
Thx

One thing the thread didnt mention is you will need new wheels with the toy axles. Not a big deal if you have stock wheels, big deal if youve spent a bunch on bead locks.

Yes, you need new wheels. Toys are 6 lug. I was in the same boat as you; I wanted Toy axles, but hated the thought of having to buy new wheels after spending so much on beadlocks. The more I looked into it, though, I realized that I could sell the beadlocks and get new wheels. Sure, you might lose a couple hundred on the beadlocks, but the benefits of the toy axles far out weigh losing a couple hundred. Besides, you'll be spending a couple grand on buying and building toy axles anyway (I know, I'm doing it right now). :D ~Steve

AHHHHHH, stick a pitch fork in it sunny! I wouldn't trade my toyota axles for nothing! Their the perfect balance. TOns of aftermarket crap for em too. If money is an issue I wouldn't do either. But if your gonna do it, do it right! That means regardless of which swap you do, at some point in time your gonna have to invest some cash!

I have roughly $2800 into my axles, but you wont find me complaining (or breaking for that matter)

Here's the best breakdown I can come up with for price. Based on what it cost me to swap a solid axle into my Yota, and outfit both with total rebuilds, 5.29s, a lockright and a detroit, and Longfields, and high-steer:

1. Front axle - $175
2. Rear axle (Free for me, say $150 for you?)
3. High Steer - Kongs4x4 - $550
4. Longfields - $230
5. Front Rebuild kit - JTOutfitters - $190
6. 4-cyl Lockright - $215
7. V6 Detroit - $390
8. 4-Cyl 5.29s - $95
9. Master Install Kits (2)- $180
10. 6-cyl 5.29s - $120
11. Rear wheel bearings (JTOutfitters) & Retaining collars (NAPA) - $90
----------------------------------
Total: $2,385

Some of this stuff you may need, some of it you may not. Like Longfields - Don't think they'd be crucial under a sammy, but I plan on running 38x12.50s, so I went for it.

I also didn't do the axles at the same time. Did the rear (5.29s/detroit/new bearings) about a month before the front, and drove around with no front driveshaft and an open 4.10 front.

LOL...

dan's got $165 buck's into his D44's the rear was 58in and offset already...

rear axle $134 (copmplete)
front axle $50 (minus locking hubs)
5 lug hub/rotor $ 14 x2
cut/respiline one front shaft $50
5.89 gears's $112 x2
mini install kits $24 x2
D44 lockrite $212
3.92 down carriers #32 x2
drive slug's (free)
5-760x joint's $21 x2
case of beer for diff assembly $21 (henry's)
10ft sched 80 pipe for steering links $8
1x4x24 flat bar for steering arms $10

so, grand total for a pair of geared and locked D44's with crossover steering is $891.00

Hmmm, not to bad if i say so myself :D
