: pulling pitman arm...secrets??
froadin4rnr 06-11-2002, 08:11 PM is there any secret to pulling the pitman arm. i am trying to pull it off the IFS box so i can go ahead and put my modified arm on. i have used a puller and a hammer. right now i'm sorta in the process of just cutting it off hoping to weaken it enough that the puller i have will finish it off. any help appreciated.
John H 06-11-2002, 08:13 PM Crank down hard with the puller then hit it with a BFH! It that fails TORCH IT!!!:nuke:
xextr3m3 06-11-2002, 08:44 PM I had to cut most of the way threw with a cut off wheel then use a pickle fork......I broke the puller:(
pmurf1 06-11-2002, 09:09 PM Get the box mounted on the truck or solidly in a vise. If it's on there that tight, there's only one kind of puller that'll get it off. And you probably don't want to spend $100+ from Grainger on it.
I just had to get one off last week that was just like yours. I ended up heating it up with a torch and it came off with a pry bar stuck in between the arm and the casting. It took a good 5 minutes with the torch to get it hot enough to break the seal. I put a new dust seal in the end of it when I took the box apart to tap for hydro assist. The teflon seal seems like it'll take quite a bit of heat, but try to only heat the arm not the surrounding box with the flame. A torch is your next step and it should work. If you don't have one, cut it off with a cutoff wheel.
Bill Collins 06-11-2002, 09:28 PM i used a prybar, bfh, and two people to get one off:smokin:
OOP'S 06-11-2002, 09:33 PM This is not bullshit, it has worked for me and a couple of other guys!!!!
1. soak the spline area with PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench or another pentrateing oil, No not WD-40.
2. Put the puller on it with a lot of load on it
3. Smack it good all the way around with a BFH
4. Tighten down the bolt again
5. Go in the house and go to bed, I did it at night.
6. When you wake up in the morning the puller and pitman arm will be laying on the floor.
It's magic!!!!!!!!!

froadin4rnr 06-11-2002, 09:34 PM thanks fellas. guess i'm pretty much on the right track with using the cut-off wheel. i have one of the three prong pullers cost me 80 bucks. the damn arms keep twisting on me. i guess the cut off wheel will do the trick. is there anything special to puting the new arm on??
Wilson 06-11-2002, 09:37 PM I broke a puller doing mine too. I ended up heatingit up real good and then getting it off of there with my second, newly purchased puller. I like teh sound of Oop's idea though
OOP'S 06-11-2002, 09:41 PM I used a cheap ass puller that I bought at HF, I think it was $12.00 or so. I tightened it down until the arms were just starting to spread then I put a big "C"clamp on the arms so they would not spread and slip off.:smokin: Going to try it again soon,I just bought a 93 IFS box for $50.00.
PS: Make sure the you lube the threads on the center bolt of the puller
Pilgrmiii 06-11-2002, 10:14 PM 5. Go in the house and go to bed, I did it at night.
Thats almost what i did. I know it was going to be a pain so i put the puller on it first and hammered it. Then I let it sit while I was cutting off the IFS. I would go back and tighten it slowly throught the swap till when it came time to put the drag link in it came right off.
Chris Geiger 06-11-2002, 10:51 PM Hammer, heat and puller all at the same time allways works for me.
Snap On Pitman arm puller and air gun. Never had to heat a pitman arm on any vehicle.....guess I just get lucky!?!?!?:D

PB blaster, amazing shit fo sho! My neighbor borrowed my PB to get an implement arm off of his 40's vintage Ford Tractor. No puller could budge it, but it came off by hand within a few seconds of spraying the PB!
Rollie, you reading this thread ?????
TNToy 06-12-2002, 01:40 PM My jeeping buddies all use the same technique, which we used when istalling my high-steer. Remember, most jeeps are 10+ years older than the Toys we're usually working on. And are a lot more likely (in stock form) to have seen mud and what-not off road than a stock, unlifted IFS Toy. Anyway, Jeeps pitmans are usually a bitch.
This is what they do:
1. Soak with PB Blaster throughly the day before. Re-apply if nessecary.
2. Tighten down puller good & tight with a breaker bar. Impact is hard on the puller.
3. Band SQUARE ON THE HEAD OF THE PULLER'S BOLT. Not sideways or whatever.
4. Tighten & repeat.
The arm on my IFS box came off the second time we banged on it this way. To quote Oops, IT'S MAGIC!!!!
