: Short throw shifter
tonichol 06-11-2002, 08:32 PM All right, Marlin has lost my order for the third time, and now it has been over a year since I have had my 4.7 gears and short throw shifter on order. I am giving him till the end of the month to send my order and then I am going to search elsewhere. Does anybody else make a good short-throw kit out there or do you guys think that it is even necessary? There's gotta be a way to make one myself. Any ideas?
Bones 06-11-2002, 08:42 PM So let me get this straight? You sat for a YEAR and you have not bought a set of 4.7 gears from someone else? Inchworm, All Pro, etc.?!?!?! Must not be in to big of a hurry. :confussed: I wouldn't waste my time if you have the cash in hand, get the AA 4.0 or 4.7's and screw waiting on Marlin. I don't see the need for the short throw either.
Arnold 06-11-2002, 09:24 PM Roger Brown sells a kit....http://4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4/ForSale/ShortThrowShifter.shtml :)
Ian30 06-11-2002, 10:33 PM I made my own short throw, I just bought a chunk of aluminum about an inch thick, used a hole saw to make the big hole, and drilled the bolt holes around the outside. Cut the bottom of the shifter off and welded in an extension(a piece of a grade 8 bolt). It looks alot like the one my buddy received from Marlin. At first I was worrried that it might break where I welded it, but it has been well over a year with no breakage. Worst case senario if it breaks, is to pull out the shifter and use a screwdriver to shift it until you can fix it.
toy 4 rox 06-12-2002, 05:49 AM i have a freind that made one with a heard piece of plastic.but i do not think he did any cutting or welding, just the spacer to change the pivit point
BigMike 06-12-2002, 11:23 AM Hey tonichol
I spoke with you yesterday on the phone. It appears that we have indeed missplaced your order that was originally placed sometime in the second half of last year. As I am sure most of you know, we had a bitch of a time getting gears from our old gear cutter, with our last shipment taking 6 months and numerous lies to get through.
But not to deter from the topic, we did in fact missplace your order. None the less, I was unaware, as not disscussed, that this was the third time it was missplaced. Now I have told the guys to get your original order and complete it this morning, but I do not know the status on that until I head in to work later this afternoon.
I have your number, and I will get this taken care of, and I appriciate you calling us *regarding our own problems*.
Now about this problem of ours of losing work orders, Ron has setup a better system with order P.O. numbers to better keep things in order and on track. So we are working hard to keep up with the demand from our great products  and hope that this problem does not reach past your order (ie. last time).
Again, sorry for the errors on our behalf, and thankyou for giving us the oppurtunity to serve you!
Regards,
BigMike
Cable Guy 06-13-2002, 08:28 PM Like Ian30 said...you can make your own. Get some 1" thick plastic and use your shifter base as a template. Buy some 2" bolts, extend the bottom of the shift lever by the same amount as your plastic (1" in this case) It will cost you about $5.

GETMRUTN 06-14-2002, 09:18 AM I was wondering, can this same extension be done to a 79-83 trans. If so, the same way?
J Kimmel 06-14-2002, 06:52 PM If you still haven't gotten yours from Marlin, I have a used one I will sell you, cheap. I recently installed a FROR twin stick into mine, and the short throw shifter is just hangin out in the garage.
rondo 06-17-2002, 11:59 AM Where 'd you pick up the 1" thick plastic for the Short Thro spacer??

Ud havea really hard time making a early toy trans (L-43) short throw since it is a side shifter not a top loader

Try tap plastics or other plastic shops...
joe_out_west 06-18-2002, 08:15 PM Tap sold me a piece out of there scrap bin, enough to make 3 spacers for $2.
rondo 06-19-2002, 08:25 AM Thanks! No TAP in denver area. They haven't heard of plastics out here yet!!! But i'll find a similar source. What's the best plastic to work with (other the silicone!!).

I use 1" thick aluminum for my spacers. For plastic, Nylon, Delrin or UHMW should probably take the heat well enough.
