What kind of differential do you have? It has been a little while since I have messed with a stock carrier. You need to remove the cross pin first, then need to push the axle shafts inward until you remove the c-clips that retain the axle shafts.

it has the stock LSD in it, is the cross pin in the middle of the differential? How do you remove it?

There should be a small balt (like 7mm or something). Remove it. When you remove it you should be able to get that cross pin out. After it's out, you can push in the axale shaft to get some slack to get the c-clip out. A magnet helps here to grab the c-clip.

Have you rotated the differential all of the way around? The bolt is fairly small...

As mentioned above, with the 8.8 you have a very small bolt that holds in the cross pin that prevnts the axles from pushing in any further. You remove this bolt, should be 5/16". Once removed, knock the pin out, you will probaly have to rotate the diff some to get it too come out. Once the pin is removed, push in the axle, when it does, take some needle nose plies, and remove the CClip, then pull the axle out. Repeat for the other side. Sometimes, the CClip will fall out without the need for needlenose pliers.

Small magnetic wands work well for this as well.

i have to go out and find a ratchet that will fit in the small space between the housing and the carrier.

its an 8mm wrench. and dont shear the bolt. or you are going to have one hell of a time getting it out.
