Monkeyboy 06-11-2002, 09:29 PM Nope it's a dana 35. This one is special though it's got 4.10's and no c clip:flipoff2:
picked up front and rear axles at the pick n pull for $120.00

If that really matters, you never will ;)
SeanP 06-11-2002, 09:57 PM Dude! Nice XJ. It's nice to see more folks building them and validating that I am not insane for building something with so much sheet metal. Make sure you take care of your cooling system (3 core rad, dump the closed system and the plastic recovery bottle). Also, stay on top of your steering box bolts---like every time you go out (ask me how I know). Build a steering box brace and you are good to go. I'll keep an eye out for you on the trails this summer. I better see some good body damage, son! :flipoff2:
And newbie, go fuck yourself in the ass when your mom is done with the strapon.
SeanP
Monkeyboy 06-11-2002, 10:06 PM Sean
This is actually my second XJ. I missed my last one so much that I slowly ended up building my daily driver up to get me back out on the trails.
I have't had any issues with the cooling system yet. I probably just jinxed myself :D
I should be out on the trail alot this summer I'll see you around.
that blue thing in the corner looks lonely, it needs a drive train :D
lookin good monkeyboy, i found u wheels now find me outers

HAHAHA It looks in pieces! and VERY VERY lonely. :) Todd needs to work on that! Or it'll get fed up and leave :D :flipoff2:
Monkeyboy 06-11-2002, 10:35 PM Hey fawkers first the newbie picks on me now you two.
Moderator Moderator I'm feeling affended help:flipoff2: \
Like I had said the Cj project gets rolling again once the Xj is ready to get me on the trail.
A few sawzall blades a few more 7018 rods Locrites front and rear and some man hours and the XJ is done.

 u can always count on me and mike you mess with ya :D and the only help youll get from a moderator is help getting made fun of:p if you ever get tired/bored with the CJ or have too much fun with the xj give it here;)
ashmanjeepXJ 06-12-2002, 12:00 PM NICE!,
I agree on the cooling and steering. Those have been my main issues with my cherokee on the trails. One or the other gives me a hassle every time!!
I should make a steering box brace, Ill add it to the list!
:D

Sean you fuggin' crack me up sometimes. I was gonna post the pic with you in the background reattaching your steering box but I digress. :)
Monkeyboy, it's lookin' good. I still like the backyard flex shots you posted of it a while ago when it was stock.
Jes
Josh 89XJ 06-12-2002, 12:28 PM Damn straight, this is what I like to see. Someone beating the piss out of a rig while it is nearly stock and then showing the progress. Get it!
Oh and Sean, you must be an angry drunk :flipoff2: Although that steering box thing reminds me, I'll PM you later today.
Monkeyboy 06-12-2002, 12:40 PM Heres a pic of the old XJ.
It was owned by mike on the board then I bought it for 500 bucks. I did some work to it then bounced it from door to door through the trails.
This pic was taken just after fresh paint and just days before a memorial day trip on the Rubicon :D

Monkeyboy 06-12-2002, 12:43 PM Only problem I ever had with it was the track bar coming loose all the time.
I blew pressure hoses off of the resavour and I had a clogged cat on the trail once
Other then that it worked flawlessly and impressed even the snobiest FJ40 owners :D
Dude was bithcing about having to be stuck behind a dam grocery getter. My buddies looked at him and just shook their heads Dude realized the XJ worked well and ended up beig really cool. He even camped and partied with us at Spider
I vaguely remember abusing that cherokee ;)
Monkeyboy 06-12-2002, 12:47 PM That was along time ago mike I wouldn't expect you te remember
Remember you haven't been on the trail for a while :flipoff2:
I know for sure you abused that poor little Grocery getter.
If you can't find tires for the CJ, I will let you borrow my boggers so you can get out on the trail.
I just eliminated one excuse fawker now go resolve the others :D
July 1st two disappear :D Packing will be done, I'll be moved (or at least started) and I wont be losing money every month! (yeah try goin anywhere doin' that. bleh)
Weasel 06-12-2002, 09:24 PM So the non clip 35 is how much better then the clip version. I have a non clip from a 84 and might swap it under the 89 if it's worth it. So how far did you go up...what kind of lift?

I'd much rather have a pressed on bearing with a collar on top of it holding my axle in then a little C clip.
When I welded up my C-clip dana 35 I was amazed that the tiny little clips could hold the shafts in. what am I talking about most of the time the clip doesn't work :D
In my case the Non C clip axle was better because it had 4.10 gears and the lack of a C clip VS. 3.07 gears and a C-clip

Your '89 is a non c-clip. I believe the c-clips started in 91. Even when they are non c-clips, they are still called "Dana 35c". The "c" stands for custom, not c-clip. They are custom because the factory had them delivered incomplete and they finished them. I'm not exactly sure what they did, but that's my story and I'm stickin too it!:D :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
As far as strength between the two, most people break the shafts or the carriers on d35s so the c-clip doesn't seem to have much to do with strength. The downside of it is, is that you have to open up the pumpkin to change shafts if you break one.
Monkeyboy 06-13-2002, 08:50 PM My 1990 XJ has a C clip axle
How do I know.
I opened it up and welded the spider gears up.
I also think that the reason Dana 35's are weak is the axle tubes are tiny.
xjpart2 06-13-2002, 09:27 PM 35's are weak regardless. c-lip or non, but at least with a non c clip you dont loose the tire/wheel/drum/axle component when it slides out because the c lip fell off when the shaft broke. its still a good idea to pull the broken pieces out of the diff. no sense in fu*cking up your r&P because you were too lazy to bust tkae 10 or so bolts and a diff voer off. :flipoff2: as for years i know my 90 had a c clip 35 in it.
Hunter
Insayn 06-14-2002, 02:57 PM Just curious, but why not buy a stronger axle than the Dana 35? Get a 9" or something and use the c-clip axle as a donor for brackets. The shaft is still small regardless of c-clip or not and in conjunction with larger tires....
Monkeyboy 06-14-2002, 03:07 PM Well the reason I'm not going bigger in the axle dept. is...
I picked up both stock XJ front and rear axles with 4.10 gears
at the pick N pull for $120.00
The XJ is my daily driver and only a mild trail vehicle meant to get me onto the trail to camp and have a little fun.
I have another project that I am working on.
The XJ is not my primary trail rig.
boz88xj 06-14-2002, 04:07 PM Mm... green... looks like jello.
Monkeyboy 06-14-2002, 04:18 PM Wassup Bozz.
Wen are we gonna get your pretty XJ out on the trail so we can de-flower it. :D
Oh ya and another reason I went with the weak stock axles in the XJ is...
It looks like a buggy project has fallen into my lap.
I might be needing a cheap running AMC V8 motor :D
boz88xj 06-15-2002, 04:21 PM Hey, it may be a virgin, but its far from pretty!
God damn im so tired right now though, lol... fucking Grad night all night. Didnt realise how tired I was till I got home at 6, I literally fell on my couch and zonked out. Just woke up!:p
Victor 06-15-2002, 07:24 PM Hey, the XJ looks great with the new wheels and tires! Did it get rid of the rubbing? Glad to see the pics:D

Chewbacca 06-15-2002, 07:49 PM I like the camera sitting on top of the block in the first pic...poser city!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
I dont think it was taken with that camera :rasta: :smokin:
EasyXJ 06-16-2002, 07:33 AM You could always do this to your 35 to help keep it from smiling at you. It also makes for a good spot for bumpstop mounts. I don't think I'd waste my money on a lock rite, but it ain't my money now is it :)
Easy
fourbychef 06-16-2002, 10:39 AM I must say your SHEEP looks much better in the after picture.
MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!
K-ton
SOCALXJ 06-16-2002, 02:47 PM Looks healthy. Congrats on the new setup.

Easy
Please tell me that's wasn't on your rig.
EasyXJ 06-16-2002, 09:47 PM Indeed it was. Of course the bright yellow only lasted one trip. I love yellow.
Easy
Monkeyboy 06-16-2002, 10:47 PM You even painted the brake shoes :D
So did I but is wasn't yellow. I used Black Hammerite instead.
Hammerite is almost too brite and shiny for my taste.
