I saw this trail rig in Arizona that had an unusual rear suspension set up. It had leaf springs in the back with shackles at both ends of the leaf pack. The axle was additionally located with a two link set up.

I have never seen or heard of this style of suspension. It seemd likea good idea. Lots of flex and a good ride (I would assume).

What type of suspension is this, does it have a name? How does it perform?

I'm gonna take a wild guess and call it a double shackle suspension setup :flipoff2:

I had that on a jeep a long time ago. I'd say it was the best form of leaf spring I ever had. Called double shackle. I used 2 upper control arms and ran the to the center line over the 3rd member. No lower links at all. Set the rear driveline up so if it went out of phase 3 degrees either way, I didn't get a shake. Has some axle wrap because of no lower links but the dual shackle kept it from bending springs.

Advantage- lets both sides of the spring flex equally=softer ride and more flex from a heavy spring.

The point might be this.

2 good springs 125.00 each
2 control arms with rod-ends 100.00 each
* spring pads, u bolts, shackles, hangers 100.00
total about 450.00

vs.

2 zj or another coil 100.00 pair
4 control arms with rod ends 100 each
* coil mounting hardware 100.00
total about 700.00

vs

2 coil over shocks 550.00 each
4 control arms 100 each
* shock mounting hardware 50.00
total about 1550.00

You get what you pay for. My advise. go coils for now. No too $. very adjustable, ez to upgrade later.

see ya,
