Could someone please tell me how to check for error codes on an '89 RR (3.9). I have an EFI light that won't stay out.
Haven't had any computer related problems since I got it ,so I haven't even bought a manual yet. Run's fine, scored great on emissions test. It stays out for awhile after I unhook the battery, then hi, it's back on.
thanks

You need a really early code reader. Not sure what is compatible. 90-95 have little led readouts.
There is very little on the EFI circuit. Likely an O2 sensor.

I was gonna replace the o2 sensors, but I haven't been able to find a local parts store that can cross reference the Lucas part #.
I think they're around 150 or so at Atlantic British. I just can't pay that.
Any one know of a domestic sensor that'll work? The one for my friends pontiac was $30 at schucks.
thanks again

antiredneck,
Does the light come back on immediately after disconnecting and reconnecting the battery?
What is the mileage on the Vehicle? The 89's are pre-programed with a mileage sensor to do a maintenance reminder.

antiredneck-
check the FAQ on www.d-90.com or discoweb, I think someone posted a Nissan x-reference that was less $$. Nathan has genuine ones that are ~$69. IIRC the Nissan ones were much less but you may have to cut and splice.

j,
It stays out for anywhere from a few miles to a few weeks. It hasn't been very consistant.
The first time it came on was when the thermostat stuck closed and it overheated. I unhooked the batt. and it stayed off. That was a year ago.
I reset the check engine light tonight. does that "box" also control the efi light? hmmm. find out tomorrow if that helped, I guess. Oh yeah, just shy of 160k.
johnathan,
Thanks a lot, I'll check out the link. And I have no problem soldering in a nissan part with a smile if it comes to that.
thanks again guys

An 89 should have a diagnostic display by the ECU probably under the drivers seat. There's no place to plug a code reader in. A list of what the numbers mean should be easy to come by on the net somewhere.

johnathan,
I found the post on d90 source. the O2 sensor part # is 226A0-40U60. (Nissan). Same manufacturer (NTK) and about $60.
thanks again

FF,
And thanks to you as well kind Sir! I didn't even know that much. Like I said, I've been very lucky and have had no serious problems so far to force me to get into the computer issues. A display by the ECU that doesn't require a separate code reader. I really like that. I can't wait to find it tomorrow, I'm giddy. Hey, I just noticed the icons,

Pretty sure that display is only on 90 and up rangies.
But I have been wrong before :)

The display screen - if it is there on your year - will be under the passenger seat behind the base panel closest to the passenger door. It's a PITA to get off the first time or two. it's about 2 inches square.
