Fatty,

Don't know if you have been following this project on izook. (http://www.izook.com/tech/techprojveh/mazukix/mzx-mock2.htm) at all??

It has some serious tube work, the rig is done, it is just taking forever for TD to get his write up finished.

well it's about 60-65% tube frame. still got to the tranny tunnel and a few other areas to tube but it's almost there.

Hey Fatty...
Thats the same direction mine is headed... The buggy shown is cool but After all the work I would fully tube it. I think you could stack another stock case into a tube sami no prob... Are you gonna streeeeeech it out? what are you gonna use for tube for your lower frame? I cant keep 120 wall under mine... Have you used 188 wall Welded in the stones and had luck?.. Mabye replaceable rockers?

it was more work to save the original frame than it would have been to just make a whole new one. i now know better for next time :D

Its wild how long it takes to re invent something then it is to invent something...

Prob a good idea to keep the front frame section and dash as that's where the VIN is stamped. Here in Washington you have to have a licensed legal vehicle on all trails and forest service roads. Last year at Naches they had a bunch of cops by the campground checking vehicles :(

you stamp your own vin # on your ne "custom" vehicle

Here's my question....When is a suzuki not a Suzuki ...If you build a tube frame, then swap out the axles,t-case,tranny, and your left with a Suzuki motor with a tube chassie, is it still a Suzuki???? Or have we crossed over to the Jeep side and swap everything out????????

poppycock

you have to have the hood... i still got the hood, firewall, and about 3' of the original frame. well within samurai regulation :flipoff2:

In my opinion in order to consider it a Sammy you have to have the grill...:flipoff2:

I am using my existing Toy axles, going to swap them over when the time is right. Not sure on the suspension yet, there are spring perches in the model, just not the rear ones. I am toying with the idea of inboarding the rear springs to match the front. I added the body tonight for reference, also my 4th idea for a nerf bar, no braces in there yet. In case anyone is wondering, this design weighs about 380lbs, 1 5/8, .120 wall.

Mines all custom tube frame but rectangle tube from the seats forward with just the tub sorta sitting on it minus the floor that ways its still easy to insure it. I'll try and get some updated photos up with the rear section completed more.

Chris,

In your CAD rendering, I see that the cage hoop in back of the seats has a reinforcment bar which goes from the right side upper corner down to the middle of the lower cross bar. Why did you choose to do this, rather that go all the way over to the lower left side?? By no means bein´critical, the design looks kewl, just curious...

Or are you just bein´cheap, economizing on tube?!?!?:flipoff2: :D

Well, this is my first serious attempt to use the 3d sketching features of this software, so I started simple. I was really aiming to just get the general shape but I added some extra stuff in during the learning process because it was convienant. Now that I have the general concept done I'll go back and refine it, move stuff around, add gussets, add the toolboxes and spare parts, etc. I am pretty happy, I got the stock Sidekick tank in there and a large aluminum storage box under the spare abd it almost fits in the stock body! I was thinking I'd have to stretch it to get more storage space. I still plan on putting in a rack over the fuel tank for camping gear/cooler.

Just you, that's my existing grill shrunk down (going to use a cut down stock grill) and the back end of the body will be gone because I could never keep that much sheetmetal alive on the trails I do. The back end looks nothing like the TT buggy and my nerfs are pretty unique I think. I am using a square light set (hardly a TT first), but it has one square light and two small projector style lights, looks cool and will take up less space than the round ones. Here's the rig I got most of my imspiration from:

http://www.azrockcrawler.com/_images/projectx/12attica_61.jpg

Here's a couple of Brent's ride: I wouldn't even attempt that kind of tube work

Hey Fat

If you do decide to buld a tube frame Samurai, I've got a Suzuki factory frame diagram showing all measurements at upper and side elevations.

if you get going on a project of this sort, let me know and i can fax a copy over. Really great tool for 'frame up' tube jobs.

Better yet, if I remember correctly, someone on this board (initals RM) has frames already drawn up in AutoCAD. If you ask nicely, he might be able to find them for you.:D

I second that. My next project zuk will have a tubed frame with aluminum fire wall and will probably be a single seater with narrowed hood, the rear will be pretty much like my last zuk with just a little change on the lower hoop and I am going to retain the look of the front end.

If things stay slow here I might have to start builing zuk buggys.

So what was so hard about retaining part of the stock frame and firewall?

just having to deal with the thin japanse metal and the light rust, which I had to sand down to bare metal.
