: AOD Tansmission gone crazy!!

Hey,
I have an AOD transmission that has developed the wierdest symptom. The AOD has about 12K since complete rebuild with all heavy duty parts. The TV pressure has been set correctly. The AOD is behind a 5.0L V8 EFI.

Ok.....heres the problem, when I come to a stop, when the engine temperature is over 210-220 degrees (such as after going up a big hill) The Transmission starts making a EXTREMELY HIGH PITCHED AND HIGH DECIBEL whistle. The transmission just SCREAMS like a train whistle. (everybody starts looking my way, giving me the look) As soon as I start accellerating, the noise goes away. But as soon as I come to a stop the noise comes back again. If I turn the engine off, It keeps whistling for about 5 secs after the engine stops. Has anybody ever had this rotational ear piercing noise problem? (sounds like it's relieving pressure) Otherwise, the transmission runs and shifts like a champ. (It has two external tranny coolers too)
(ohh, by the way, the noise comes from the front of the trans near the Torque Converter.

Thanks,
Al

The intermediate oneway clutch could be your proplem.Iv heard them squeal but never loud enough to be heard outside the vehicle.I know there is an updated oneway but it may only be availabe for the AODE.Does it do it in park too?

Your sure its comming from the trans?

yep, it does it in park, although, not as bad as when it's in gear. and yes it coming from the trans. I got down under there (with the E-Brake on of course) and listened in on where it was coming from. (Torque Converter area.)

holy shiat if your engine temp is hitting 210-220 i would think the tranny is smokin hot put a bigger cooler on it and
change your engine thermastat thats to hot

I, know its definately running too hot, its been in the 90 to 100 degree range here the last couple fo days, so when I go up a big hill, the engine gets kinda hot. (due to my inadequate colling system. Otherwise the engine runs right at 195.

I'm going to be getting a High CFM Mechanical fan, and hopefully will take care of my problem......

By the way, the tranny is cooled by 1 internal radiator cooler, and TWO externally mounted coolers.

Hey do you have a tranny temp gage on the pan or in one of the cooler lines?
If not it might be a good idea to put one in I run an AOD and I run a mid eighties honda aluminum a/c condensor in front of my radiator for a tranny cooler, I was in Saline Valley last July it was around 100^ to 105^ and my AOD never got above 180^ that was a peak temp the average the AOD ran was 160^.
I know of one guy who's AOD ran hot he had an exhaust pipe a 1/4" from his pan or case for about a foot or so.
By the way I don't run the cooler line threw the radiator just in/out of the cooler, if I lived in a cold climate region I would run it threw the radiator.
You might chech the vent tube it may have some debree blocking it or it may be crimped off needing a certain amount of pressure to force its way threw causing the loud hi pitch sound you described.
Good luck let us know what it is when you figure it out. Later.

tonto........ I was in Saline Valley too. I train whistled the whole way through Saline Valley with my loud ass transmission. I came in South Pass, and came out North..... My engine and transmission kinda got hot going up some of those passes. In fact, Saline Valley is when my transmission first started making the ear peircing noise.

My question is, will the tranny run cooler if I disconnect it from the Radiator?

Thanks,
Al

I think your tranny will run cooler if you d/c it from the radiator, I believe your adding heat to the tranny when the engine temp. is hitting 210^ plus, the only reason I've been told they run those lines threw the radiator is to cook out the h2o that collects in the t-fluid, I've been told that tranny's do and do not have an operating temp., personly I believe in keeping my tranny as cool as possible I don't believe its like running an engine to cold where it will wear faster if it's not at an operating temp.
Just out of curiosity who's radiator are you running and what water pump?
Good luck, keep me posted on your progress.

that is not to hot for a trans especially not after three coolers. the pump may be going out or there is a un controlled pressure leak causing the noise. you should just have it pulled and inspected or take it to a trans shop and have a expert inspect it on a lift preferably a builder.

The radiator is a 1997 V8 5.0L Explorer radiator. (It's huge) but, I have a very very small cooling fan and no shroud. (ALthough This is soon to be replaced by a High CFM Mechanical fan. ) The Waterpump is just a stock 5.0L Musang W/P. Normally, I run right at 190 degrees, but on really hot days, especially going up hills, It gets hot (ie; 220+) Anyway, thats what the Mech fan is for.
What i'll probably do, is pull the trans, and have all the seals replaced. (fairly inexpensive, and have them check the Pump.) I'll also put in a new torque converter, because that is where the noise is coming from. (Its a rotational pressure noise) Luckily I know a good tranny guy! With the new mechanical fan, and a electric blower fan, I hope to keep my trans Extra cool, whether I am stop an go in 122 degree Phoenix weather or climbing up a hill in Death Valley. I'll write back with an update to this strange problem. http://home.earthlink.net/%7Easp84/62fan.jpg

The trip to the Saline Valley was to test out my cooling system, it passed, I to used to run with no shrowd living near the beach and going wheeling in the cooler months of the year, never realized how much you needed one in 85^ plus climates untill I started to get into the next level of wheeling, first time I went to Johnson Valley it was in May and it was hot, I had no shrowd and it seemed o.k. got to the trail head for Sledge Hammer and I was at 210 at idle, decided it was not the day to run Sledge Hammer, so I went home and slammed in a fullsize truck radiator and made a custom shrowd out of epoxy & 6oz. glass, the core of my radiator is as big as the entire E.B. radiator, I never broke 200^ last year in Salin Valley I stayed at thermostat temp most of the time, also I had a bunch of parts around from a wrecked honda civic so I taped the inside of the fittings w/ a 1/8" pipe tap on the A/C condensor and stuck in some brass barbed fittings, done.
With all this said I believe if you install a shrowd you will see a dramtic decrease in temp., if I had a stock stock style radiator I would get one of the stainless shrowds that I think Toms Bronco Parts makes, probably last forever.
I appreciate you keeping me updated alway curious about other E.B. over heating problems. Later.
